Memorial: TYNE COT MEMORIAL

As can be seem in the following photographs, a laminated CWGC Certificate has been attached to this stone. However, on checking various Birth and Marriage Certificates, there are a few discrepancies.

1. John McAllister was the illegitimate son of 19 year old Elizabeth Speirs McAllister. He was born 19th April 1898 at Glenmavis, by Airdrie.
2. Elizabeth Speirs McAllister, whose occupation was listed as Domestic Servant, married William Mundell at Greyfriars Manse, Dumfries on 7th April 1905.
3. The CWCG Certificate attached to the gravestone lists him as son of William and Elizabeth McAllister McMundell, of Townhead, Claddens, Airdrie. The family surname is in fact MUNDELL – not McMUNDELL.

And his brother

MATTHEW McDOWALL, R.E.
Died from illness
contracted while on active service 16th July 1919 aged 28 years

His death certificae lists him as a blacksmith, with no mention of his military service. Cause of death is given as "Natural causes, probably heart failure). The actual date of death was 26th July 1919, not 16th as per the inscription. He died at Alexandria Parade, Dunoon although his usual residence was given as Woodend Cottage, South Biggar Road, Airdrie.

He is not listed on the CWGC, and there is nothing in his death certificate which would justify a case being submitted to them for inclusion.
