With all the "noise" about the centenary commemoration of the 1916 Battle of the Somme, I thought I'd check my database of about 2000 names from across Dumfries and Galloway since, from memory, the 1 July 1916 date does not appear very often.
I was surprised to see only 17 names - 3 from the 1st KOSB, 3 from the 16th Royal Scots and 1 from the 15th, 3 from the London Scottish (1/14th London Regiment), 3 from the 2nd Royal Scots Fusiliers, and 1 each from the 2nd Gordon Highlanders, 11th Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, 15th Highland Light Infantry, and the 19th Manchester Regiment.

Gordon Cemetery Mametz has over 90 Gordon Highlanders buried there all died 1st July.

Others are remembered buried in Dantzig Alley British Cemetery, Mametz and I have approximately 200 on my database died that day mostly remembered at Thiepval Memorial.

Seaforth Highlanders HLI & London Regt (London Scottish).

1st July 1916 does not feature prominently in Scottish lists as none of the three Scottish divisions took part on the first day of the battle. They all did take part in later actions between July and November 1916. the 51st were in at the end at Beaumont Hamel and famously a company of the Tramways battlion of the HLI held out for a week after the official end of the battle in a captured German trench. The 15th Bn - in action at the start and the end of the battle. The 15th, 16th and 17th HLI all served in 97th Bde 32nd Div at the Somme.

The units you do list Ken are mostly regulars and the 15th and 16th Royal Scots which served in 34th Division alongside the Tyneside Scots and Tyneside Irish and suffered badly on 1.7.16.

I'm surprised 2nd Bn Seaforth Highlanders doesn't fetaure in your list as they had very high casualties on the first day and like most regular units recruited many men from outside the traditional recruiting area.

Thanks

Adam

Stirling war memorial has 7 men who fell on 1st July 1916 including 2 brothers, David and James Lyle, both 16th HLI and both buried in Lonsdale Cemetery, Authuille.

The others are 2 more HLI (1 16th and 1 17th), 2 16th Royal Scots and 1 1st KOSB.

2 half-brothers, Robert and William McNab, 16th HLI, from Callander area were also killed on 1st July. William is also buried in Lonsdale Cemetery; Robert is commemorated on Thiepval memorial
