I've posted this on the thread for the Stichill Memorial near Kelso where he is named as HAGGART , John , Private , 9th Bn Royal Scots , 1915
http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?p=76437#76437
but I'd like to give him a bit wider circulation to see if anyone knows of him.
HAGGART, JOHN
Rank:Private
Service No:S/4634
Date of Death:25/09/1915
Age:22
Regiment/Service:Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) 9th Bn.
Panel Reference:Panel 78 to 83.
Memorial:LOOS MEMORIAL
Additional Information:Son of Jane Haggart, of The Laundry, Hensol, Mossdale, Kirkcudbrightshire, and the late James Reid Haggart.
The Stewartry Roll of Honour lists him as "of Kelso" and a "Pre-war a territorial with 8th Royal Scots. Enlisted September 1914."
He was born in 1893 at Holmhead, Corsock Bridge, in the parish of Kirkpatrick Durham, Kirkcudbrightshire. The son of the late James Reid Haggart of Glenlair, Corsock and of Jane (McFarlane) Haggart.
In 1911, age 17, he was an apprentice gardener at Auchmore House, Killin, Perthshire and SDGW gives his enlistment place as "Pathhead Ford, Midlothian" - so it does look like he got about a bit.
He is named on the memorial in Corsock Village as:
PTE. JOHN S. HAGGART, BLACK WATCH. _________________ Ken |
