Jane Nodwell was a VAD nurse who died on service in Yorkhill War Hospital, Glasgow on 19th November 1918. She is buried in Kells churchyard and listed on the Kells and Dumfries Academy memorials. In light of the recent revised criteria to VAD nurses http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=9560 I have today written to Terry at IFTC to ask whether this is worth pursuing.

I have also written to Sue Light at the excellent scarletfinders.co.uk to see if she might have any information to add to the case.

Reply from Terry...................

The criteria for qualifying VADs now state that VADs contracted to the War Office are to be treated on the same terms as military personnel.

Therefore, such a VAD can qualify simply by dying in service between the qualifying dates or after discharge of a reason caused by service or aggravated by service (and proven to be so with documentation). Simply dying after discharge of an illness contracted in service is not a qualification.

To prove this you will need official documentation proving her status as a VAD and a death certificate. War memorials and newspapers are not good enough though may help to support a case. You need service records of some description. Then you must prove that they were contracted to WO. Knowing where they were posted will help with this.

A VAD working in a military hospital run by the WO had to be contracted and so the status of her establishment of work has to be proven (simply being called ‘war hospital’ is not proof as it may have been under civilian control).

Your case is worthy of investigation but you have a long way to go before a case can be made and submitted.

Keep us informed of your progress and we can advise as you go.

I checked the Red Cross site for online V.A.D. records but nothing for Nodwell. It may still be worth sending an e-mail enquiry.

Can't see anything yet referencing Yorkhill being run by the War Office.

Thanks, last I heard, only the surnames beginning with A or B plus a few others had been done. I am in the middle of the email to the Red Cross, I just want to make sure I include all relevant info and ask all the questions in one mail.

Just got this from Terry Denham of the In From the Cold Project:

Ken
I have now obtained a list of all WW1 hospitals in the UK giving masses of data but also splitting them between War Office and Red Cross/St Johns/Civilian run sites ie qualifying and non-qualifying for VADs.
Yorkhill is listed as a 'Auxiliary' site and so is non-qualifying for VADs.
Sorry
Regards
Terry

Still, there is now a new resource for checking VAD non-comms.

That's a shame. Had the same problem with a number of nurses.
