I know of a few instances locally where the Mc part of the name is dropped and just not used - even to the present day. For example a work colleague's name is McNally but his mother was always known as Betty Nally, never heard the Mc used in her name so it may be that the service records just show what the soldier told them his name was, rather than what was on his birth record.
