Reprising other casualties I found notes relating to James Rhind who is commemorated at Port of Menteith, Perthshire.

The following death notice appeared in the local newspaper.

STIRLING OBSERVER: 02.03.1918
DEATHS

RHIND - At Blairhoyle, on 24th February, the result of gas poison, Private James Rhind, 8th Battalion Canadians, beloved eldest son of Mr and Mrs Rhind.

His DC states Phthisis (2 years).

I found an old e-mail from Jim Grant sent in the summer of 2014 which stated;

Hi Mark

Just received info from Canada. Very clear from files he had TB and discharged due to same. Will copy files to you later

Regards

Jim Grant

Unfortunately the service records never reached me as Jim became ill around this time. I will await James' service record going online.

Mark - do you want me to phone/e-mail Stirling Council/Archives for you regarding James Rhind's burial? Port of Menteith is under their care.

Blairhoyle Ruskie is 'sort of' between there and Thornhill (Norrieston) Churchyards.

Stirling Archives comes up trumphs again!

Port of Menteith Cemetery as follows: -

SCA Reference No: PR/PM/4/1 Port of Menteith Cemetery, Lair Register 1908 – 1987

Row M Lair 18
Proprietor: D.J. Rhind, Blairhoyle
Private James Rhind, 27th February 1918 (extra depth)

If an actual copy of the register is required, Stirling Archives pricing policy is that if they send you an image, it costs £2.00. If however, you pay a fee of £5.00, you can photograph as much or as little as you want. Photocopies cost 55p, but this depends if the Register is fragile or not (and it usually is!)

I forgot to ask about a lair map/plan so I'll do that and you can let me know if you want me to organise copies.

Mark - James Rhind has a very detailed entry on the Canadian Great War Project at
http://www.canadiangreatwarproject.com/searches/soldierDetail.asp?ID=159948
which suggests that someone has researched his service.
It might be worth an e-mail to see if anyone has obtained his service record.
It's going to be a while before they get to the "R"'s in the digitisation programme.

Mark - I doubt very much if James Rhind's name is on a family stone in Port of Menteith. I've been there a few times and I think I only ever found one WW1 name on a family stone (Henry Lardner).

Ken - I looked at that site too, but I wrongly presumed it was just details copied from 'the usual' two pages. I noticed that it says he's commemorated on 'Menteith' Memorial which isn't quite right obviously.

If Jim Grant had copies of his records, you would think they would have been added to the already digitized ones even if they are out of sequence?

Great stuff Mark!

I get the feeling you might have a busy time ahead with all these 'non-comms' you've found!
