Pte. A. Stewart, Black Watch, is commemorated on Persie & Glenshe War Memorial, Perthshire.

This casualty was difficult to identify but I was fortunate recently to find an entry in a register for Old Blacklunans Primary School which recorded an Alexander Stewart and provided his date of birth and his father's name.

By the 1901 census the family had removed from rural Perthshire to Dundee.

I found Alex's death which occurred at Dundee Royal Infirmary on 20th February, 1919 from Croupous Pneumonia (post influenzal). He was a private in the 1st Black Watch and
an entry in the Soldier's Effects Register corroborated the detail.

His death notice in the Dundee Courier was obtained together with his MIC, Medal Rolls etc.

This morning I forwarded the details to Terry Denham who agreed that Alexander Stewart looks like an 'in service death'.

Details in the system and "fingers crossed".

Mark

I'm running out of things to cross Mark!

Will crossed-eyes do?

Anne Laughing

P.S. Have you found his place of burial?

Reply from Dundee City Council;

Dear Mark,

Thank you for your email enquiring about the burial place of Alexander Stewart.

He is buried in the Eastern Cemetery, Arbroath Road, Dundee in Section MM Lair 219. The lair was purchased by Marjory Cuthbert or Stewart in 1908 for the interment of William Stewart, Marjory Stewart was later buried in the same grave in 1920.

As far as our record tell us there is no headstone on this grave.

Regards,

Irene Brady

That was quick!
I think you must be getting the hang of this, Mark.
