The coffin, draped with a Union Jack, was mounted on gun carriage drawn three horses, one of which was riderless. Immediately behind , the coffin walked the deceased's brother, the Rev. J. Somerville Smith, North Woodside Parish, Glasgow, the chief mourner; Mr William Smith, Clerk Lieutenancy, Canada House; and Colonel the Rev. The coffin bore the following simple inscription: " Private Alexander Smith (153299), aged 44 years, 43rd Canadians."
