This potential non-comm was first identified in a thread about men from Bute who couldn't be found on the CWGC database

http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?p=74558

It seems like James Nuttall could possibly be considered for commemoration but it isn't yet cut and dried. Tne discussion which started on the other thread would be more appropriately continued here.

The WW1 Roll of Honour for Bute contains an entry for James Nuttall

NUTTALL, Private James
Rothesay
Cameron Highlanders
Died of gas and shell shock, 16th June 1918

Here is what has already been posted about him

I think we have ourselves a non-com here.

S/10635 Private James Nuttall Cameron Highlanders.

I have his MIC and fortunately his service record survives with a link to Rothesay. It even has a date of death just 18th instead of 16th June. He had a SWB too. Discharged as unfit due to military service. All we need then is to prove that cause of death stated in the ROH

I have his death certificate. Cause of death is chronic nephritis. Does that match the service record?

Incidentally the death certificate has the 16th as his date of death

I'll email the DC on to you if you'd like, Paul.

There was some debate about chronic nephritis being linked - or not - to gassing on the GWF several years ago

His Pension Record also exists
Report of Medical Board 21/3/1916
Cause of discharge - Acute Nephritis
Origin Oct. 28th 1915 at Vermelles. Taken with sickness, headache and anaemia............Result of active service due to exposure to cold and wet. Permanent..............May improve later. Expires 7/10/1916.

His progress was reviewed at 6 monthly intervals until he was admitted to the Royal Alexandria Hospital in Paisley on 5/6/1918.

Looks like an excellent case for commemoration!

Ken

So his death wasn't as a result of gas and shell shock but it was as a result of war service. Private Nuttall should be commemorated.

Next question is of course, where is he buried?

Adam - It doesn't help much but I'd guess one of the Paisley cemeteries.
His Service Record is really scrappy but it looks as though he was a Paisley "buddie". His parents lived there. His wife was a nurse at the Samaritan's Hospital in Govanhill and I think his child was living with relatives in Rothesay.

Jim Grant used to have a contact for Renfrewshire cemeteries so perhaps the IFCP team have details?

I'll phone Renfrewshire Cemeteries Office tomorrow, so .....

Paul - Can you send me copies of his MIC & SWB Service record?

David - Can you send me a copy of his DC?

Ken - Can you send me copies of his Pension Record?

I could go and look myself, but as you guys already have the info to hand ......!

If I get a positive response, I'll get in touch with Terry, send him all the appropriate documentation and see what he has to say. Getting burial details aren't sufficient, a photo/scan of the Register has to be submitted or a print out if their records are digitized.

Well, that was easy!!

Got the details from the Cemeteries Office within 2 minutes. (Awaiting an e-mail of the details)

James Nuttall is buried in Hawkhead Cemetery, Section D, Lair 1018.

I now have the paperwork confirming that James Nuttall is buried with other members of the Nuttall family in Hawkhead Cemetery, Section D, Lair 1018.

His burial was 19th June 1918, age 28 and his cause of death on the Register is stated as Kidney Disease. Chronic Nephritis is Kidney Disease, so his DC & the reason for his discharge are the same

His father and mother are also buried there, so this wee bit of extra info confirms he's without doubt, the same James Nuttall and the family address is consistently 13 Maxwell Street, Paisley

I'll send all the docs to Terry later today and report back when he replies.

Anne

My goodness, you go offline for 24 hours and look what happens!

Well done Anne for finding his grave and getting his case progressed so quickly.

Crossed fingers.

Thanks

Thanks Adam.

It's really very straightforward. As long as we can supply a good amount of corroborating evidence, Terry is happy to do the rest.

Blimey, I spend one evening preparing for an after-school club, another on driving the community minibus and when I get back, it all seems to have been done. Well done everyone, anything still wanted from me?

It's OK Paul, I downloaded the documents you had and sent the relevant ones to Terry.
