I have now started a thread for James Nuttall in the non-comms section of the forum.

http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=9444

All further discussion about him should take place there and this thread should continue with discussion about the other names.

Thanks

Adam

A quick update on James Nuttall. His case has been forwarded on to the "In From The Cold Project" as a non-commemoration.

That's two men from Bute the SMRG have now identified as non-commemorations.

Thanks

I have now reordered the first post of this thread to differentiate between those listed as killed in action, those listed as died of wounds, the naval deaths and the men who died after the Armistice.

Potentially the men who died of wounds and died in 1919 may be CWGC non-commemorations if they died in Rothesay and the registrar did not inform the then IWGC of their service related deaths. Given that there have been two non-comms already identified in Rothesay it may be possible there are more.

McLEAN, Private John
Rothesay
Canadian Expeditionary Force
Died of illness in Canada, 22nd October 1918

There is a CEF attestation paper for a Private John McLean number 15525 who had NoK living at the High Street, Rothesay. Date of birth 12th October 1894 in Glasgow

http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/first-world-war-1914-1918-cef/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=161940

There is no unit written or stamped on the attestation paper, which in my experience is unusual, but he enlisted at Valcartier which was the big camp set up at the start of the war for CEF recruits which handled tens of thousands of men in the early months of the war.

There is also no mention of a date of death which is sometimes stamped on the attestation paper.

This site has him in the 6th Bn and surviving. The 6th Bn did not serve overseas and was disbanded in April 1918.

I will see if I can find anything more about him.

Two identified but one has already been accepted by CWGC and is now commemorated.

That's now two commemorated as Pte Nuttall has now been added to the CWGC database.
