Fallin men missing from war memorial,

NAMES MISSING FROM THE FALLIN MEMORIAL

During my research into Fallin’s World War I casualties and on checking the memorial I discovered two names were missing. Both of these men were residents of the village and one of them was also born in Fallin. This discovery should be looked into further, to correct this omission. It is important that everyone who made the ultimate sacrifice is remembered.

Hi Malcolm, internet connection still dickie. Did you pick up on the two names missing from the Fallin War Memorial, I informed Archie Bone, Chairman of the Community Council and Councillor Tom Hazel, their local representative on Stirling Council, Archie was going to check the local archives, but so far I've heard no more from them. Willie.

From the photographs it looks like Gunner Charles McMeechan Royal Artillery was added to the list of Second World War names at a later date to the others so hopefully they will look into any Great War omissions as well.

Hi Adam, I spoke to Gunner Charles McMeechan's son, also a friend of his who was involved in getting the name added to the memorial. They said it took a long time involving a lot of research and effort to do it. Gunner McMeechan is Remembered on Panel 24 of The Singapore Memorial (no known grave). Willie.

On the Daily Record website today:

"Scots squaddie to be rememered on WW1 memorial after 90 years
Nov 29 2008

A SCOTS soldier killed in World War I is to get his name on his village's war memorial at last.

Private Andrew Paterson, from Fallin, Stirlingshire, lied about his age so he could enlist in 1914.

He died in France in October 1918 but, due to a blunder, his name was left off the memorial.

The community council are to put that right."

Is it known why it is believed these men were left off in the first place?

It would seem unlikely that the inhabitants of a small mining village and the family members would not have known those who went to the war never more to return home. I also notice that Andrew Paterson is absent from the Fallin Public School Roll of Honour.
There were many valid reasons why men were left off a memorial.

Hi Jim, I have given the Community Council all relevent documents to help carry this forward and may be going to their next meeting to do a talk on the memorial and the two men.

Willie.

PS look at my posting for Bridge of Allan's War Memorial there are a couple of names missing from that I have found who should be looked into, I have given the relevent information to the people involved in the renovation project.

Willie

Thanks for the details. The situation at Bridge of Allan is shocking, I hope the original panels are recovered. From earlier research I understand these memorials are in the care of Stirling Council and that they have a procedure to approve / decline proposals to add names to memorials.

With some records being more readily available there are some cases being promoted throughout the country ( I am not suggesting this is one) simply because it is now discovered a man was born, or lived for a short time, in a particular place. This information was usually known in the 1920's and a decision made.
Simply adding names for these reasons if it happens, is in my view, an interference with history and the work of the relevant committee. I accept they had their failings, but in small communities they generally carried out their duties efficiently.

A wee bit 'off-topic' here but the situation of 'missing names' isn't exactly exclusive to memorials.

I've discovered over the years that even listed CWGC graves don't always have a stone. The reasons for this can be varied but the one which always 'gets to me' is that the family, for one reason or another at the time, didn't wish to have any stone and CWGC have to abide by their wishes.

Whether this can/will ever be changed, I don't know, but I have a few photos of CWGC graves and grave sites with no stone or marker of any description or other ones of family stones with no mention of the individual recorded on them.

Anne

I also agree it is very sad that some graves are not marked at all. All had the opportunity, but as you state, it was for the next of kin to decide. In their grief in some cases they did not want the name on a war memorial although some, looking at it from the 2008 angle, find it difficult to appreciate.

CWGC's Charter will not permit them to erect headstones in these cases, that is unlikely to change. I understand a CWGC stone can be erected if the family chose to add the name to a family stone. This can only happen if the condition of the private stone, over which CWGC have no authority, deteriorates with age / damage to such an extent the details are gone. In some circumstances a CWGC headstone can be put in place to commemorate the casualty only.

There's no William Lyle on the memorial, only a James.
