The first name on this memorial appears on the CWGC lists as Norman McD Teacher, DSO. He was Lt Col of the 1st/2nd RSF and died 26.9.17. He rests in Ypres Reservoir Cemetery.

Unveiled on 23rd Nov 1921 by Sir Richard Waldie Griffith.

Several of the names listed also appear on the Edgerston War Memorial.

ALEXANDER C. COWANS L/CORPORAL Ό KOSB.
Alexander Cranston Cowans – age 28 – Lance Corporal (200845) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander worked on the farm at Swinside Townfoot, Oxnam when he enlisted in October 1914. He landed as Private (7469) with his battalion at Gallipoli in June but was wounded two weeks later and evacuated to hospital in Alexandria, Egypt. Later he served in Egypt and Palestine where he was killed at El Mughar.
Born 1889 in Morebattle, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Alice (Cranston) Cowans (died 1907) and of Andrew Cowans of Yetholm Mains, Kelso, Roxburghshire and of Longframlington, Morpeth, Northumberland.
Killed in Action on 13 November 1917 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.
Also named on the Yetholm Parish War Memorial and on the Kelso War Memorial.

James was working with his father, the farm steward at Oxnam Row, when he enlisted in September 1914. The 1st Battalion had returned from India in November and James landed with them at Le Havre in January 1915 but he was killed three months later.
Born 1896 in Glendale, Northumberland. Son of John and Elizabeth (Jameson) Dumma, of Oxnam Row and of Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada.
Missing in Action on 26 April 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

Robert Jameson Dumma – age 19 – Private (7150) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert had also worked at Oxnam Row but was a van man in Jedburgh when he enlisted in November 1914 and he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He was wounded and evacuated to Alexandria but contracted enteric fever and dysentery and died in the 15th General Hospital.
Born 1895 in Glendale, Northumberland. Son of John and Elizabeth (Jameson) Dumma, of Oxnam Row and of Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada.
Died on Active Service on 4 November 1915 and buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
In 1901 the family were in Acton, Alnwick, Northumberland but by 1911 were in Oxnam.
John and Elizabeth and their remaining children emigrated to Canada in June 1920

JOHN GEDDES PRIVATE 1/9 RS.
John Geddes – age 21 – Private (352151) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
John worked on Cunzierton farm in Oxnam where his father had been a shepherd. He enlisted as Private (133931) in the Royal Field Artillery before transferring as Private (25463) to the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He was posted as Private (5471) to the 1/9th Royal Scots in France in 1916. John was wounded and evacuated to the 4th General Hospital at Dannes-Camiers where he died.
Born 1895 in Oxnam. Son of the late James Nichol Geddes (died 1912) and of Jane Ann (Ponton) Geddes of Cunzierton, Oxnam.
Died of Wounds on 16 May 1917 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.


ADAM GLENDINNING PRIVATE Ό KOSB.
Adam Glendinning – age 30 – Private (201190) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Although born in Northumberland, by 1901 Adam, aged 14, was a shepherd with his father in Langholm, Dumfriesshire and by 1911 they were in Southdean, Roxburghshire. Adam was at Fairloans Farm in Oxnam when he married in 1913 and he enlisted in the 3/4th KOSB in November 1915. He was posted as Private (8117) to the 1/4th KOSB in Egypt in 1916 and he served in Palestine where he was killed during the crossing of the River Auja.
Born 1887 at Falstone in Bellingham, Northumberland. Son of the late Jane (Turnbull) Glendinning (died 1889) and of Walter Glendinning of Hobkirk Manse Cottage, Bonchester Bridge, Roxburghshire. Husband of Jane Elliot (Scott) Glendinning of 65 High Street, Jedburgh and of Temple Hall, Bonchester Bridge who he married in 1913 in Oxnam.
Missing in Action on 22 December 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the adjacent Edgerston Parish War Memorial.


WILLIAM M. HALLIDAY PRIVATE RGA.
William Mather Halliday – age 30 – Gunner (116265) Royal Garrison Artillery.
In 1901, aged 15, William was a farm worker at Sprouston, Roxburghshire and, aged 31, he was a labourer at Crailing Hall, Oxnam when he enlisted in December 1915. He was mobilised in August 1916 and was in training when he died of pneumonia.
Born 1885 in Morebattle, Roxburghshire. Son of the late George Halliday (died 1911) and of Jane (Barrie) Halliday of Crailing Hall, Oxnam.
Died on Service on 16 February 1917 and buried in Jedburgh (Castlewood) Cemetery. (CWG)

WILLIAM L. KEDDIE BOMBARDIER RGA.
William Lauder Keddie – age 24 – Bombardier (107271) 266th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
William enlisted in July 1916 and went to France in February 1917 but was killed five months later when a shell hit the edge of his gun pit.
Born 1892 in Hume, Berwickshire. Twin son, with David, of David and Agnes (Forsyth) Keddie of Harden Mains, Oxnam, Jedburgh and of Woodheads, Greenlaw, Berwickshire.
Killed in Action on 22 July 1917 and buried in Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery, Belgium.
William's twin brother David was a chauffeur when he enlisted in the Army Service Corps in December 1915. He was discharged from the Army in August 1919.


ADAM B. LAIDLAW PRIVATE 7/8 KOSB.
Adam Laidlaw – age 20 – Private (24975) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Adam was a ploughman Oxnam Neuk Farm, when he enlisted in mid-1916.
Born 1896 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire as Adam Bell Laidlaw. Son of the late Robert Laidlaw, forester at Hartrigge, Jedburgh, (died 1902) and the late Christina (Wilson) Laidlaw (died 1907) Brother of William of Dolphinston Farm, Jedburgh.
Killed in Action on 23 April 1917 and buried in Tank Cemetery, Guemappe, France.


ANDREW McDOUGAL PRIVATE 1st S GUARDS.
Andrew McDougal – age 34 – Private (14049) 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.
Andrew was employed at Oxnam Neuk Farm when he enlisted in late-1915. He was fatally wounded in October 1917 and died two days later in the 47th Casualty Clearing Station.
Born 1883 in Melrose, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Helen (Hope) McDougal of Oxnam (died 1912) and of Thomas McDougal of Sharplaw, Jedburgh.
Died of Wounds on 11 October 1917. and buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.

ALEXANDER PAXTON PRIVATE A&SH.
Alexander Paxton – age 24 – Private (S/7010) 1/8th (Argyllshire) Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Alexander enlisted in 1914 and landed at Boulogne with the 11th Battalion, A&SH in July 1915. He had been at the front for three years and was serving as a battalion runner in the 1/8th Argylls when he was fatally wounded.
Born 1894 at Oxnam Neuk in Oxnam as Alexander Murdie. Son of Martha Murdie.
In 1901 he was living as Alexander Paxton, aged 8, at Linton, Roxburghshire with his uncle James Paxton and with James's mother Janet (Murdie) Paxton, sister of Martha.
He named his sister Janet Paxton who lived at Crailing Hall, Oxnam as his next of kin and legatee.
Died of Wounds on 29 July 1918 and buried in Senlis French National Cemetery, Oise, France.


JAMES G. POTT TROOPER L&B HORSE.
James Gideon Pott – age 36 – Private (1585) "D" Squadron, 1/1st Lothians and Border Horse
James was educated at Edinburgh Academy and, although described as a “landed proprietor”, he enlisted as a Private in 1914 and landed in France in September 1915 before moving to Salonika in November. A year later James died of a cerebral haemorrhage.
Born 1880 at Lintalie, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire. Son of the late George Pott of Potburn, Ettrick, Selkirkshire (died 1898) and Marion Wilson (Milne) Pott of Albany Street Edinburgh and of King's Road Chelsea, London. Husband of Mary Cameron (Anderson) Pott of Millheugh, Oxnam and of "Hybla," Wallace Avenue, Toorak, Melbourne, Australia who he married in 1905 in St. Giles, Edinburgh.
Died on Active Service on 3 December 1916 and buried in Sarigol Military Cemetery, Kriston, Greece.
Also named on the Ettrick Parish War Memorial in Selkirkshire and on the Edinburgh Academy memorial.


JAMES J. QUEENAN PRIVATE Ό KOSB.
James Queenan – age 23 – Private (7169) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1892 in Southdean, Roxburghshire as James Queenan. Son of John and Mary (Gilligan) Queenan of Oxnam Row.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

James Reid – age 21 – Private (40905) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Born 1895 at Easter Wooden Farm, Eckford, Roxburghshire. Son of James and Euphemia (Turnbull) Reid of Samieston Farm Oxnam and of Broadloan, Kelso, Roxburghshire.
Killed in Action on 3 May 1917 and buried in Dury Crucifix Cemetery, France.


JAMES SMITH PRIVATE Ό KOSB.
James Smith – age 22 – Private (7475) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a shepherd like his father. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was fatally wounded during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1892 in Ashkirk, Selkirkshire. Son of the late Esther (Elliott) Smith (died 1898) and of Henry Smith of Upper Samieston Farm, Oxnam and of Dalcove Mains, Kelso.
Died of Wounds on 13 July 1915 and buried in Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.

and his brother who also fell at Achi Baba Nullah.

GEORGE SMITH PRIVATE Ό KOSB

George Smith – age 29 – Private (6890) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1901 and 1911 George was a shepherd at Hounam, Roxburghshire. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1885 in Edgerston, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Esther (Elliott) Smith (died 1898) and of Henry Smith of Upper Samieston Farm, Oxnam and of Dalcove Mains, Kelso.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


ANDREW TAIT PRIVATE Ό KOSB.
Andrew Tait – age 23 – Private (200850) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew was a ploughman at Crailing Hall when he enlisted, together with his brother Henry, in December 1914. Andrew as Private (7476) and Henry as Private (7477) joined the battalion in Egypt and they served in Palestine where Andrew was killed.
Born 1894 at Lintlaw, Bunkle and Preston, Berwickshire. Son of Henry Tait, farm steward, and Margaret (Hope) Tait of Crailing Hall, Oxnam.
Killed in Action on 13 November 1917 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.

NORMAN McD. TEACHER MAJOR RSF.
Norman McDonald Teacher, Distinguished Service Order – age 39 – Lieutenant Colonel, 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Norman was educated at Clifton College in Bristol before he was commissioned in the RSF in the 1890's. He was promoted to Lieutenant in February 1900 and was promoted to Captain while seconded to the Egyptian Army in December 1914. He was awarded the Fourth Class Imperial Ottoman Order of the Osmanieh in January 1913 and the Third Class of the Imperial Ottoman Order of the Medjidieh in May 1914 by His Highness the Khedive of Egypt, authorized by His Imperial Majesty the Sultan of Turkey, in recognition of valuable services rendered. He rejoined his regiment in September 1914 and was awarded the DSO as a Major in January 1916. He was appointed to command the battalion in May 1917 but was killed four months later.
Born 1878 Crosshill in Cathcart, Lanarkshire. Son of the late Donald McDonald Teacher (died 1882) and of Cecilia Norton (Laws) Teacher who had married in 1874 in Glasgow but by 1881 the family were at Sydenham Hill, Lewisham, London.
In 1889 Cecilia married Harold Jalland Stiles, a noted surgeon who was knighted for this war-time service at Bangour Military Hospital.
Husband of Dorothy Annadale (Hone) Teacher of Samieston, Oxnam and of Newtown Hill, Leixlip, Co. Kildare who he married in 1911 in Cairo, Egypt.
Killed in Action on 26 September 1917 and buried in Ypres Reservoir Cemetery, Belgium.
His son Norman Joseph Macdonald Teacher, Distinguished Service Order – age 29 – Lieutenant Commander, Royal Navy was killed on 28 February 1943 while serving with Combined Operations Pilotage Party No.3 Royal Marine Commando prior to the landings on Sicily.


ADAM S. TELFER PRIVATE Ό KOSB.
Adam Smith Telfer – age 24 – Private (7301) 1/4th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Adam landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1891 at Fairloans in Oxnam. Son of William and Agnes (Smith) Telfer of Jerdonfield, of Langhaughwalls, Jedburgh and of Edgerston Tofts, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Edgerston Parish War Memorial.

THOMAS TODD PRIVATE Ό KOSB.
Thomas Todd – age 22 – Private (200852) 1/4th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas was employed on the farm of Crailing Hall, Oxnam when he enlisted as Private (7478) in December 1914. He joined his battalion in Egypt in 1916 and served in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1895 at Butchercote, Mertoun, Berwickshire as Thomas Tod. Son of the late John Todd (died 1914) and of Jane (Hogarth) Todd of Crailing Hall, Oxnam.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.


THOMAS TURNBULL L/CORPORAL 5th CANADIANS.
Thomas Turnbull – age 22 – Lance Corporal (424053) 5th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Thomas had been a farm servant at Harden Mains, Oxnam before he emigrated to Canada and he was farming when he enlisted at Portage La Prairie, Manitoba in February 1915. He was at Shorncliffe Camp in Kent in July 1915 and was posted to his battalion in France that same month. He was wounded and admitted to the 1st Canadian General Hospital in Etaples on 6 June 1916 before being evacuated to the Woburn Military Hospital, Bletchley, Bedfordshire where he died.
Born 16/3/1894 in Eccles, Berwickshire. (Source: Service record and 1901 census but I cannot trace his birth record)
The 1901 census shows him aged 7 as the son of Thomas Turnbull and living with Thomas 52 and Thomas's sister Agnes 46 and his niece Jane 27, at Crailing, Roxburghshire.
His service record has his next of kin initially as his father Thomas of Kirkton, Hawick and later his cousin Mrs J. Stewart of Kaimflat, Ednam, Roxburghshire. Jane Turnbull married John Forbes Stewart in 1905 in Ednam
.
Died of Wounds on 12 June 1916 and buried in Woburn (St. Mary) Churchyard, Bedfordshire.


ROBERT J. YOUNG PRIVATE 2nd KOSB.
Robert James Young – age 20 – Private (45276) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert died of fever in the 56th Casualty Clearing Station at Grevillers.
Born 1898 in Gullane, Dirleton, East Lothian. Son of Thomas and Janet (Mabon) Young of Dirleton, East Lothian, of Lower Chatto, Oxnam and of Synton Parkhead and of Nether Tofts, Hawick, Roxburghshire.
Died on Active Service on 21 October 1918 and buried in Grevillers British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the neighbouring Hownam Parish War Memorial, Roxburghshire.

Missing in Action on 19 August 1917 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the neighbouring Edgerston Parish War Memorial, Roxburghshire.
