The memorial is not listed on UKNIWM (separate memorials are listed as 44336 and 44337). This memorial is some distance from Kirkmichael church where the listed memorials are.

OS Map Ref: NX 047 874 at the crossroads to the East of the village.

Just occurred to me that I have no idea what the quote means.

"Fallen to rise
Baffled to fight better
sleep to wake"

any idea what that is all about?

The quotation on this Memorial is taken from the last poem written by Robert Browning - Epilogue to Asolando:

One who never turned his back but marched breast forward
Never doubted the clouds would break,
Never dreamed, though right were worsted, wrong and triumph,
Held we fall to rise, are baffled to fight better
Sleep to wake'

I think that the two men named McNEISH - one in each war - are sort of related.

Name: McNEISH

Age: 23
Date of Death: 29/10/1918
Service No: 5025
Additional information: Son of George McNeish, of Parkgate, Kirkmichael.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Cemetery: KIRKMICHAEL PARISH CHURCHYARD, Dumfriesshire

Name: McNEISH, ALEXANDER FRASER TAYLOR

The latter, who is also listed on the Terregles War Memorial, was the step-son of George Little McNeish. He was born as Alexander Fraser Taylor in 1910 in Kirkmichael and his mother, Margaret Jane married George (widower) in 1912.
