The Stirling roll of honour has:
Donald Peddie, 1st Gordon Highlanders, 11 Irvine Place, Stirling.
I've found a likely candidate on SNWM and a medal card but nothing on CWGC. I tried putting just the date in CWGC but the only burials/memorial references in India on that date were Indians. The medal card gives no info other than the date 31/5/22 beside the entry for the British medal. Any suggestions as to other tactics I could use to find out where he is buried?

Surname PEDDIE
Forename Donald John
Rank Pte
Service number 16980
Decoration
Place of birth Little Dunkeld
Date of death 10 July 1919
Theatre of death India
Cause of death Died
SNWM roll THE GORDON HIGHLANDERS
Other detail 1st Bn.

Sandra - We need a Gordon's expert but as far as I can find the 1st Gordons were not in India in July 1919.
Like you I cannot trace him anywhere else (CWGC nor SDGW) but then he shouldn't be in the latter as his death was post-war.

It's probably a co-incidence but a Donald John Peddie, aged 43, died in 1919 in Hillhead, Glasgow.

Very odd Confused

Thanks for responding Ken (and for double checking!) I can't understand why he'd be on SNWM and not on CWGC - I've found several the other way round. A wee visit to the Scotland's People satellite at Alloa is called for, I think; see if the birth at Little Dunkeld links to the death in Hillhead!!

Sandra, he's on one of your church memorials (North Parish Church):

Would Stirling Archives have anything about the unveiling of the plaques?

I know it wouldn't help in identifying your man, but it might help if you had a definate date to work back from.

Donald John Peddie born Little Dunkeld and died Western infirmary Glasgow. Usual residence 11 Irvine place Stirling. 43 years old. Son of Alexander Peddie and Catherine McLeish. Married to Mary Goodall. Died of sprue (7 months) which is apparently a tropical illness often contracted by soldiers in India.

Ya beezer! Tanya, you are a gem!! Thank you so much. It is greatly appreciated, especially as you have limited time in this country for your own research.

Glad to have been able to help a little. The lady in Register House was very helpful too - I just couldn't read the cause of death, but she came up with the answer.

No service record survives and there is no register of soldier's effects so it seems probable that he died after discharge. His mic shows he was awarded the British War Medal but not the Victory Medal - I am guessing that tells us he served overseas but not in a theatre of war. If the cause of his discharge was related to his cause of death then he could submitted to the in from the cold project but I don't know how you would show that unless it is on his death certificate or something in a local paper.
