Names on the first line of each entry are as they appear on the memorial.
The second line details are from the Parish Church Roll of Honour.

JOHN ELDER
ELDER, John …. Highland Light Infantry
John Elder – age 19 – Private (5/13591) 6th Battalion, Training Reserve.
John was initially attached to the 31st Reserve Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers which became the 86th Training Reserve Battalion which in turn became the 6th Training Reserve. He became ill while in training and died at Clipstone, Southwell, Nottinghamshire.
Born 1899 in Polwarth. Son of the late David Elder (died 1916) and of the late Catherine (Middlemiss) Elder (died 1913) of Broomypark, Polwarth.
Died on Service on 15 April 1918 and buried in Polwarth Parish Churchyard. (CWG)


A.W. INGLIS
INGLIS, Andrew W. …. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
Andrew William Inglis – age 21 – Lance Corporal (13074) 105th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
Andrew had been employed on the Newton Don estate, Nenthorn before becoming a gamekeeper on the Marchmont estate, Polwarth. He enlisted as Private (S/15151) in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in November 1915 and went to France in early 1916 but transferred to the MGC. Andrew was badly wounded in October 1917 and died a month later in the 4th General Hospital at Camiers.
Born 1896 in Nenthorn, Berwickshire. Son of the late James Inglis (died 1916) and of the late Mary (Grieve) Inglis (died 1913) of Middle Lodge, Newton Don, Nenthorn.
Died of Wounds on 12 November 1917 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Nenthorn Parish War Memorial, on the Kelso War Memorial and on the Kelso Trinity Church memorial.


D. JAMIESON
JAMIESON, David …. King's Own Scottish Borderers
David Jamieson – age 31 – Private (7466) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
David served his apprenticeship as a joiner in Gordon, Berwickshire and had been working at Bridgend, Duns before he moved to Polwarth. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah. (but see below)
Born 1883 in Gordon, Berwickshire. Son of the late John Jamieson (died 1910) and of the late Alison (Paton) Jamieson (died 1912)
Janet Stenhouse Cairns, whose father was an estate joiner in Polwarth, was named as his legatee.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

The few military records available show him as Missing Presumed Died on12/7/1915 but two local newspapers published in the first week of July report that he was seriously wounded. So it may be that he died of his wounds on 12 July and not in action.

J.R.D. McEWEN
McEWEN, James Robert Dundas …. Royal Scots Fusiliers
James Robert Dundas McEwen – age 20 – Lieutenant 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
James was educated at Eton and was commissioned from there in August 1914. He went to France in February 1915 and was promoted in April.
Born 1896 in Edinburgh. Son of Robert Finnie McEwen and Mary Frances (Dundas) McEwen of Marchmont House, Polwarth and of Bardrochat, Colmonell, Ayrshire.
Missing in Action on 12 October 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Colmonell Parish War Memorial and on an individual memorial in St Colmon Parish Church, Colmonel.


A. McLEISH
McLEISH, Adam …. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Adam McLeish – age 19 – Private (8094) 2/4th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Adam died of influenza and pneumonia in the Trinity Military Hospital in Hawick, Roxburghshire.
The Red Cross Society had established an auxiliary hospital in the Trinity School in Hawick.
Born 1896 in Polwarth. Son of Andrew McLeish and of Isabella (Allan) McLeish of Marlyrig, Cothill, Polwarth.
Died on Service on 13 December 1915 and buried in Hawick (Wellogate) Cemetery.

A. McLEISH

Adam McLeish – age 24 – Private (24042) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Adam was a forester at Cothill, Polwarth when he enlisted as Private (23136) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in February 1916. He was posted to the 2nd RSF in France in June but he was killed six weeks later.
Born 1891 Gavinton in Langton Parish, Berwickshire. Son of the late Isabella (Kerr) McLeish (died 1915 in Polwarth) and of Alexander McLeish of Cothill, of Elwartlaw, Greenlaw, Berwickshire and of Clinthill, St. Boswells, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 30 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

Grandsons of the late Adam McLeish (died 1909 in Chirnside) and of the late Martha (Bell) McLeish (died 1898 at Marchmont, Polwarth)

THOS. SCOTT
SCOTT Thomas …. Black Watch
Thomas Messer Scott – age 30 – Private (S/8376) 1st Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
In 1901 Thomas was a Telegraph Messenger at Marchmont Station, Polwarth where his father was the Stationmaster. He joined his battalion in France in July 1915 but he was killed two months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1885 in Melrose, Roxburghshire. Son of Walter and Alison (Messer) Scott of Polwarth.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.


C.C. WATT
WATT, Charles Cecil …. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
Charles Cecil Watt – age 22 – Second Lieutenant, 4th (Reserve) Battalion attached to the 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Charles was educated at Berwickshire High School in Duns before he became a Student of Arts at Edinburgh University in 1913. He joined the Officer Training Corps in November and enlisted as Private (S/9776) in the 14th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, together with his brother Francis Clifford Watt, in June 1915. They were both commissioned in the KOSB in January 1916 and Charles joined his battalion in France in October. Francis survived the war.
Born 1895 in Polwarth. Son of The Rev. Charles James Watt and of Margaret (Mathie) Watt of Polwarth Manse.
Killed in Action on 8 May 1917 and buried in Orchard Dump Cemetery, Arleux-En-Gohelle, France.
Also named on an individual memorial in Polwarth Church, on the Berwickshire High School memorial, on the Edinburgh University Old College memorial and Roll of the Fallen.



Not on the memorial but buried in the Churchyard:

John Sutherland Pringle – age 19 – Private (62741) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers
John was a forester at Marchmont, Polwarth when he died of tuberculosis at the Gordon Fever Hospital in Berwickshire. His father was a gamekeeper and the family had moved from Fife to Blackburn Rig, Cockburnspath by 1905. By 1916 they were at Marchmont.
Born 1900 in Largo, Fife. Son of George Pringle and of Janet (Sutherland) Pringle (died 1921 in Polwarth)
Died on 28 June 1920 and buried in Polwarth Parish Churchyard. (CWG)
