The Scotsman, 24th November 1920

DUNS - Mr FS Hay, Duns Castle, unveiled a memorial which has been erected in Duns Public Park to 84 officers and men of the burgh and parish who fell in the war. The memorial is in the form of an obelisk 26 feet high on a stepped base, the material used being fine grained sandstone of a light colour, with Aberdeen granite panels on the plinth for the reception of the names.

The Buildings of Scotland - Borders, p231

Immediately inside the Public Park entrance, a War Memorial, a tall obelisk of c1920... South of that, a polished granite monument of 1981 to Polish soldiers stationed at Duns and killed in the Second World War.

The Polish memorial has name panels on the sides. Did you get images of those panels?

Regards

Adam

I've uploaded pictures of the memorial and inscriptions on its own thread:

On page 1 of this thread there is mention of the three Burnett brothers and the fact that Frank is listed on CWGC as being in Stirling. Here is a paraphrase of the Stirling Observer article when Frank was killed. I presume the two brothers mentioned are the others on the Duns war memorial.
Stirling Observer 22 August 1916
Killed
Private Frank Burnett, KOSB; wife Maggie Hutton, 13 Glencoe Road; killed in action in France on 19th July; struck by a piece of shrapnel on head; 24 years old; employed with Mrs Johnson, fishmonger, 50 Port Street; enlisted July 1915; native of Duns; married a month before enlisting; elder brother in A&SH killed October 1915; another brother in KOSB wounded and missing

Sandra

Edit: Having now found census records for Frank Burnett, I think I can confirm that William, David and Frank were indeed brothers. 1901: 11 Newton Street, Duns. James Burnett 55 slater and plasterer, Jane 49, William 18, James 15, David 10, Frank 9 and Maggie 7. In 1911, David 20 (a baker), Frank 19 (a fishmonger's assistant) and Maggie 17 were living with their widowed father at 13 Newton Street, Duns.

Hi Guys,

My Great, Great Grandad features on the memorial, FRED HILL.
I was wondering if anyone can help me find out more information about him. I have no information at all and its so frustrating.

Contact me anytime if anyone can find any information.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, welcome to the forum, this should really be in the requests section so the mods may move it. With only Fred Hill as a name, commemorated at Duns and with no other info (rank, date of death, regiment etc) it will be almost impossible to identify him with any certainty. There were 220 F Hills who died in WW1 and a good many of them were Fred or Frederick.

No F Hill have Duns recorded on CWGC or SNWM as place of birth or next of kin so if you have nothing in your family records then a search through local newspapers seems the next step.

\Paul

It's a bit complicated but Fred is on the CWGC Register as
Frederick Barnett, Private (23312) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
If you check him out on Soldiers effects and on his Medal Roll and MIC then Fred Hill was an alias. There is also a full (but very messy) set of service record pages which explains a lot.

I've tried messaging Jen_Hill who posted the original request but it was posted some time ago - January 2009.......

CORPL. JOHN AIRLIE
Note: most civil records show the family name as ARLEY but census records from 1881 have Airlie
John Airlie – age 37 – Corporal (12816) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John had served with the KOSB for about eight years both in India and during the South African War. He re-enlisted in September 1914 and he joined his battalion in France in December 1914.
Born 1877 in Greenlaw, Berwickshire as John Arley. Son of the late Mary (Ferguson) Airlie (died 1889 as Arley) and of Thomas Airlie of Gourlay's Wynd, Duns.
Missing in Action on 9 February 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Our Lady Immaculate & St Margaret's Catholic Church memorial in Duns.

PRIVATE G. AITCHISON
George Stewart White Aitchison – age 24 – Private (18958) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
George served his apprenticeship as a grocer in Duns and was working in Edinburgh when he enlisted in the 16th (2nd Edinburgh) Royal Scots in December 1914. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in January 1916 and was wounded in April 1917 and again in August when he was evacuated to hospital in London. When he had recovered he was posted to the 15th Royal Scots in January 1918 and to the 2nd Battalion in May.
Born 1893 in Duns. Son of the late Agnes Anderson (White) Aitchison (died 1917) and of Robert Aitchison of 49 Castle Street, Duns.
Missing in Action on 23 August 1918 and named on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France.
Also named on the Duns Parish Church memorial.

SERGT. W. W. ALLAN
William Watson Allan – age 39 – Sergeant (200283) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a tailor when he enlisted as Private (6957) in the KOSB in January 1900. He served in South African War and later joined the Territorial 4th KOSB. He had his own tailoring business in Duns when he was mobilised in August 1914 and as Corporal (4460) he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in early June 1915 but he was wounded three weeks later and evacuated to a hospital ship. William then served in Egypt and Palestine before the battalion moved to France in April 1918.
Born 1879 in Westruther, Berwickshire. Son of the late John Allan (died 1885) and of Jane (Wright) Allan of 11 North Street, Duns. Husband of Margaret (Robertson) Allan of Berrywell Cottage, Duns who he married in 1915 in Duns.
