I was drawn to this memorial as it gave dates of death along with theatre. Good news for the researcher, I thought. Now I know from personal experience the type of mistakes that appear on a memorial so this is only for perusal.

Michael Anderson - Died Home
Peter Colligan - cannot find him (sometimes the civil records provide an answer but this gaves a 'date and western front'?
George Murdoch - records give 11.05.1916
Alfred Price - 15.10.1918
Duncan Scott - records have nothing close enough
Daniel Shaw - records show 02.04.1916
EF Tibble - records show 16.04.1918
George Wales - records show 25.03.1918
Joseph Griffiths - Salonika
James Kirk - Persian Gulf
Humphrey McFarlane - records show 26.02.1918
John Blaikie - records show 02.11.1941
Roderick Devlin - records show 17.06.1943

There are also some name variances but that is very common.
I think what was done was the right idea, and done with the best of intentions, but with such mistakes was it?

Mark

Hi Mark,
I think the official records might be more trustworthy than the war memorial, after all I think most war memorials wern't based on anything official but on what the relative or friend requested to be recorded and they could easily have made a mistake, espescially if it was a more distant relative. Maybe the person who gave the details for a name on this memorial was a work colleague or neighbour while the man's close family (who would have got it right) lived in Dunkeld.
By the way I've been surprised by some of your postings, it just shows the kind of mobility there was at the start of the last century. Its often thought most folk were born, lived and died in the same wee part of the country and if they travelled more than 30 miles t was a big adventure and nobody would understand their local accent! Clearly this is a myth. Maybe someday someone will use this forum to write a thesis on the social mobility of rural Scotland in the early 20th century. Shocked

Jim,

Blairgowrie & District was a place of great movement (coming in and going out). The river Ericht powered many mills, there were factories, the 'berries', agriculture in general and one of the few places in Scotland to grow flax, iron & engineering works, a plethora of shops & businesses, the railway station. It was also the HQ of the labour Corps during the Great War also...... Ill stop now.

I am still trying to pin some of the men connected to the town with other memorials which has been quite successful. I'm going to try that with some of the others I've transcribed.

cheers,
Mark
