As well as the stone monument just outside the village, there is a large wooden memorial structure immediately inside Kilcacolm community centre (formerly the village institute) in the heart of the village at junction of Bridge of Weir Road and Lochwinnoch Road.

On entering the building, the memorial is on the wall to your left. It rises over 8 feet from ground level and is some 7 feet wide. In the centre are listed the surnames and initials of all the fallen of the village for the First World War. Above the names is the phrase “Pro Patria”, and then below “In Remembrance of Kilmacolm’s Brave Sons 1914-1918” At the very bottom is the inscription:

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.”

The fallen of the Second World War have been added in matching panels on either side.

A small plaque in the lower right corner explains that the memorial was “Designed, Executed and Gifted by George MacKintosh 7th Nov. 1930”

Graeme,

Are the names the same on this memorial as on the stone monument?

A quick count of the names gives the same total of names from what I can see but they are in a different order. Only names and no ranks or dates.

I know from another place I've seen wooden plaques with the same names as the memorial in a Community Centre, they were from the British Legion.

The community centre / Library looks older than the 1930s. Was it converted as an ex-serviceman's club in 1930 perhaps?

Probabaly worth a look in the local papers of the time.

On another subject there are a lot of Lieutenants on that memorial. Is there any reason why Kilmacolm would have produced so many junior officers?

There is one name (J MacInness) which appears under the WW1 dead in the wooden list but not the stone one. All other names match between the two.

The building that is currently the Community Centre was originally a hotel. But the village held a successful vote in the 1920s to prohibit the sale of alcohol throughout the village. This likely drove the hotel out of business, and the hotel became the village institute (a community run place of recreation and improvement). In fact, there are plans to re-site the community centre and library, as the building is considered unsound. I will investigate to ensure that proper plans for the re-siting of the war memorial are integral to this.

There are a large fraction of officers among the dead. Kilmacolm has always been a particularly wealthy village, and I suspect that family and school connections would have ensured that an unusually high fraction of those serving did so as officers.

It is of Kemnay granite, designed by James Austin Laird and built by William Vickers of Glasgow. The land it is sited upon was given by Sir Joseph P. Maclay Bart.

The unveiling report gives 77 names on the memorial, so no later additions.

Two of Maclay's sons were killed in the First World War. In their memory, he and his wife Martha gifted to the University a building in Park Terrace for use as a student hall of residence, Maclay Hall.

An article in the 21st June Glasgow Herald mentions that a Sgt. P. Quinn of the Black Watch has been missing for two weeks, a postman in Kilmacolm. This seems to tally with the name on the memorial.

However I can find only two P. Quinn's of the Black Watch, both privates, and neither with a connection to the area.

3/3339 KIA 10/02/1915
&
S/6595 KIA 09/05/1915

who are both in the Dundee RoH.

Any ideas?
