According to the book "Port Glasgow and Kilmacolm From Old Photographs" by Joy Monteith and Robert McPherson (1981, published by Inverclyde District Libraries) the original memorial was unveiled on Sunday 23rd October 1921 by Sir Hugh Shaw-Stewart (who became Lord Lieutenant of Renfrewshire the following year). This book reports that over 3000 men from Port Glasgow enlisted during the First World War, of which 319 were lost. The screen wall commemorating the fallen of the Second World War was unveiled on the 9th November 1952.

During my research I have located this soldier, who does not appear on this memorial. I was wondering would any members have any further information on him which may explain how he was not named on the memorial.

George Oakley is also commemorated on Arbroath civic and Old Kirk memorials.

George was from Arbroath and had moved to work in Gourock. His father David had moved to Port Glasgow from Arbroath, hence his inclusion on the memorial there.

In the Arbroath RoH he is listed as serving in the 79th Trench Morter Battery after first enlisting in the A&SH in 1914, then transferring to the Royal Defence Corps before volunteering for foreign service in October 1917. He was killed in Action.

Port Glasgow War Memorial has been relocated by a few metres to the north since the first photo in this thread was taken. I don't know the exact date of the relocation, which was part of a major redevelopment of the area, but I believe it was around 1999/2000.

Inverclyde Council gardeners always made a great job of the flower bed in the foreground in these photos (both have military themes), but the flower bed has been removed as a result of yet another redevelopment in 2011.

I made a quick visit to Port Glasgow today and can report the the area around the memorial has been improved by landscaping.

Compare the first photo below with the first photo in this thread to see how far the memorial has been moved since then. It once stood where the red flowers are, to the right of the bus shelters. The top of it can be seen on the extreme left.

I was surprised and pleased to find my uncle's name there. Joseph Dunn was my mother's brother and I just knew that he was in the merchant navy and that he "died at sea".

How can I find more information about the circumstances of his death?

The SS San Gerardo was a tanker and was torpedoed in the Western Atlantic. http://www.wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?136090
