The following soldier is listed on this memorial.

DOWNEY (Downie), Joseph Private 18554 1st Bn Royal Dublin Fusiliers
Born: Port Glasgow Enlisted: Greenock
Date of Death: 07/08/1915 Cause: Killed in action (Initially reported as missing).
Other notes: Private Downey’s Medal Index card shows him as entering the Gallipoli Theatre of Operations on 20/6/1915; the Index Card also shows him as “Pres Dead 7/8/1915.”
Special notes: This soldier is listed on the IWM Records, the SNWM, Soldiers Died (Part 73) and the CWGC with his surname spelt as “Downey”; the Port Glasgow War Memorial and his Medal Index Card shows it spelt as “Downie”.
Grave/Memorial: Panel 190 to 196. Helles Memorial.
Other memorials: Private Downey is named in the Scottish Roll of Honour in the Scottish National War Memorial, Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh; he is also commemorated (as Joseph Downie) on the Port Glasgow War Memorial, Fore Street, Port Glasgow, Inverclyde.

Private McGlinchey was in the Army for seven years, and had been stationed at Malta for four years previous to the outbreak of war. He had been through all the fighting since October last."

(Glasgow Herald 28th April 1915)
"Mrs Couper, 24 Bay Street, Port Glasgow, has received intimation, through a friend in Glasgow who has a relative a prisoner of war in Germany, that her son, Private Peter Couper, of the 2nd Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, has died in a hospital in Germany. He was a Special Reservist, and on the oubreak of hostilities was called up. During the Mons engagement he was taken prisoner. According to the note which has reached his mother, he died on the 24th of that month, the letter received on Saturday being the first intimation since his death. Mrs Couper's eldest son, Alexander, was killed on October 26, two days after his brothers death. Private Peter Couper, who was 29 years of age, was employed as an apprentice carpenter with William Hamilton & Co. Shipbuilders, the Glen Yard, Port Glasgow, before he left for active service. Two other sons of Mrs Couper's are serving in Kitchener's Army."

The War Return states Peter Couper "Died in the Field", no mention of death as a POW.
According to CWGC, SNWM and the War Return Alexander was K.I.A. on the 20th, the day before Peter on the 21st.

He was an Inspector of Factories and was living in Old Trafford, Manchester when he enlisted as Pte.8384 in the Manchester Regiment in September 1914, before transferring to the Royal Fusiliers.
