Another entry from the Rothesay and Bute roll of Honour. The details in the roll are:
Quote: | No. S/14335, 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
Died from shock of battle, 20th October 1919
Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal – “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in organising our line after all his company officers had been killed. He exposed himself continually in collecting parties of our men who had become separated, and assisted greatly in re-organising the Lewis Gun teams when casualties occurred (East of Ypres, 22nd August 1917).”

No record of him on CWGC. Couldn't locate a surviving service record. Checked Scotlandspeople for deaths in 1919 and got no matches, same for 1920. There is one for 1918 but that person was 61 so unlikely.
Strangely there is a Corporal Neil Leitch who enlisted in Rothesay who died in 1917. Strangely he isn't on the roll, but I think he is not the same man. The DCM citation for Leitch states he is from Rothesay, so he must be the right man. |

Thanks Ken, I checked both Medal Index Cards. Neither of them have any further details, and don't even mention that he died.
I had a look at the actual medal roll - has no further information either. |

Thanks for that, good work everyone.
Looks like I need to order the death certificate from Ireland - that will need to wait until pay day!
Without a service record it might be difficult to establish it's the same man with the DCM, even harder to confirm it's a service related death. We'll see what the death cert says though. |

Neill Leitch appears in this interesting RoH for County Meath;

I am quite sure he would have had an obituary in the newspapers at the time given his position. |
