St Andrews Church closed for worship (believed to be in 1948). Other memorials were moved to the Castle Douglas parish church but the windows and plaque were left and St Andrews is now the Lochside Theatre. The windows and plaque are in the foyer. It is not known if there are other windows to the former church that could be considered as war memorials but all other windows are boarded up and inaccessible.

UKNIWM Ref: 44381

OS Map Ref: NX 763 620

I apologise for the shocking state of the photos including my own reflection. I will try and get something better but I thought it worth posting what I had anyway.

I am not sure anyone has the full story about the windows in this former church. UKNIWM states that the memorial consists of 5 windows, 2 in light boxes and 3 blocked up. The presence of the plaque beside the 2 windows would lead you to believe that they are the memorial, but they seem more like eclesiastical windows to me. I have put a better photo of these 2 for others to judge.

The other 3 windows are boarded up and can only be seen from the outside but with little detail discernable.

Jim Paterson, the manager of the Theatre, believes that the 3 boarded up windows are the memorial.

I have written to the minister of the parish church (where the memorial boards from this former church now reside) and I hope that he can provide some clarification and perhaps old photos. Depending on his reply, I will follow this up with a letter in the local newspaper.

I spoke to yet another local today who used to worship in this building when it was a church and she also confirmed that it is the 3 boarded up windows which were the war memorial. I have left my contact details and asked to be informed if it is ever necessary to do any work in the theatre which may result in them being temporarily uncovered.

I have now updated the WMR/UKNIWM report accordingly, and revised it to use the new name of the theatre-the Fullarton, while still citing its former name of The Lochisde
