This memorial was unveiled on 30/10/1921 by Mrs. MacRae from Stenhouse, who also gifted the site of memorial to village in remembrance of her only son who died in WW1. The memorial was built by Messrs Stewart & Co Dumfries; Is in grantie and the celtic cross rough hewn rises from a subtaintial base and on the bar of the cross inscribed Tynron. On the base in black lettering is the inspriction 'To the glory of God and in honoured memory of the men of this parish who fell in Great War 1914-1918' Then follows the 6 men as see above.
After Mrs MacRae unveiled this memorial a handsome address was given by Colonel R.Y. Herries.

PTE. D. M. CARRUTHERS, K.O.S.B.
David McMinn Carruthers – age 32 – Private (241085) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
David was a ploughman at Bennan, Tynron when he enlisted as Private (4360) in 1915. He joined his battalion in Egypt and served in Palestine. He was wounded at Gaza on 19 April 1917 but was able to rejoin his battalion only to be fatally wounded in November. David died in the 66th Casualty Clearing Station at the Deir el Belah railhead.
Born 1886 in Dunscore, Dumfriesshire. Son of John McMinn Carruthers and of Agnes McLean (McDonald) Carruthers of Shancastle, Glencairn, Dumfriesshire. Husband of Agnes Broadfoot (Murchie) Carruthers of Bennan, Tynron who he married in 1913 in Tynron.
Died of Wounds on 14 November 1917 and buried in Deir El Belah War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also named on the Tynron Parish Church memorial now in Tynron Village Hall.


PTE. J. H. McMUNNIES, K.O.S.B.
Joseph Hunter McMunnies – age 19 – Private (16336) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Joseph enlisted in October 1914. He was drowned when the troopship “Royal Edward” was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UB14 in the Aegean. Of the some 900 casualties, about 60 were from the 9th (Reserve) Battalion, KOSB as replacements for losses in the 1st Battalion.
Born 1896 in Tynron. Son of the late William Hunter McMunnies and of Fanny (Petrie) McMunnies of Birkhill, Tynron.
Killed by enemy action/Lost at Sea on 13 August 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Tynron Parish Church memorial now in Tynron Village Hall.

2/LT. I.A. MACRAE, K.O.S.B.
Ivor Alexander MacRae – age 19 – Second Lieutenant , 3rd Battalion attached to the 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Ivor was educated at Aldro School, then in Eastbourne, and at Harrow School, Middlesex. While at Harrow he distinguished himself in various branches of sport and was a clever footballer and cricketer. During the school vacations he frequently played for the Dumfries Cricket Club. He was a Lance Corporal in the school's Officer Training Corps and was commissioned from there into the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion of the KOSB in January 1914. He joined the 2nd KOSB in Ireland for training before he returned to Dumfries in July. He was posted to the 2nd KOSB in France in September but was fatally wounded a month later at Cuinchy.
Born 1895 at Stenhouse, Tynron. Son of Donald MacDonald MacRae and of Rosalie (Lloyd) MacRae of Stenhouse, Tynron.
Died of Wounds on 14 October 1914 and buried in Bethune Town Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Tynron Parish Church memorial now in Tynron Village Hall and on the Harrow School memorial.


PTE. A. STRACEY, A. & S.H.
Alexander Stracey – age 23 – Private (143128) 9th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps.
Alec enlisted as Private (S/6168) in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and landed with the 10th Battalion at Boulogne in May 1915. He was wounded for the second time in April 1917 and was posted as Private (17535) to the 8th Black Watch before being transferred to the MGC.
All three units were part of the 9th (Scottish) Division.
Born 1895 in Watford, Hertfordshire as Alec Charles Stracey. Son of Charles (a coachman) and Jeanie or Jennie or Jane (Thomson) Stracey of Lannhall Lodge, Tynron and of 23 Brewery Street, Dumfries.
In 1901 the family were living at Hillfoot Road, Dollar, Clackmannanshire but by 1911 they were in Tynron. (Alexander, 16, was in Kirkmahoe)
Missing in Action on 27 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France.
Also named on the Tynron Parish Church memorial now in Tynron Village Hall.

Joseph Sykes – age 19 – Private (S/40882) 1/7th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Joseph was employed by Sir Emilius Laurie on the Maxwellton Home Farm, Moniaive when he enlisted in 1917. He was wounded in March 1918.
Born 1898 in Glencairn, Dumfriesshire. Son of Joseph and Mary (Moffat) Sykes of Lannhall, Tynron.
Killed in Action on 12 May 1918 and buried in Roclincourt Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Tynron Parish Church memorial now in Tynron Village Hall and on the Glencairn Parish War Memorial in Moniaive.


PTE. R. TURNER, S.R.
Robert Turner – age 26 – Private (203899) 5th/6th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Robert was resident in Tynron when he enlisted in Dumfries.
Born 1891 in Inverchaolain, Argyllshire. Son of Neil and Jane or Jean (Moffat) Turner of Toward Old House, Dunoon and of Burgh Depot, Hamilton Street, Dunoon, Argyll.
Missing in Action on 20 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Tynron Parish Church memorial now in Tynron Village Hall and on the Dunoon War Memorial.

His younger brother, Driver Donald Turner (T4/061635) Army Service Corps was awarded a Croix de Guerre in 1918 “for heroic services given on 25th March in keeping up supply of ammunition in the heat of the battle, and by contributing to save valuable material.”

1939 - 1945


SGT. AIR GUNNER F. D. BELL, R.A.F.
Francis Douglas Bell – age 22 – Sergeant/Air Gunner (1371967) 161 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
161 (Special Duties) Squadron was a highly secretive unit, tasked with missions of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) and the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) Their primary role was to drop and collect secret agents and equipment into and from Nazi-occupied Europe.
Francis was the rear gunner on a Halifax bomber which had taken off from RAF Tempsford in Bedfordshire for an operation to Czechoslovakia but the aircraft crashed and the crew were buried in Munich West Cemetery. They were re-interred in Durnbach in November 1947.
Born 1920 in East Ward, Westmorland. Son of Frank and Elizabeth (Hill) Bell of Moniaive, Dumfriesshire who had married in 1913 in Glencairn, Dumfriesshire.
Frank was chauffeur to Dr. John B. McMoreland in Moniaive in 1915 and by 1925 he was in Tynron. He was chauffeur at Lannhall, Tynron in 1935.
Killed in Action on 14 March 1943 Durnbach War Cemetery, Bayern, Germany.
Also named on the Glencairn Parish War Memorial in Moniaive.

SGT. PILOT T. R. GASKELL, R.A.F.
Trevor Roger Gaskell – age 21 – Sergeant (967096) 92 Squadron, Fighter Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Trevor had celebrated his 21st birthday and had been presented with a silver salver at Auchenbrack on 7 April 1941. Four days later, flying his Spitfire fighter from RAF Biggin Hill, he was shot down over the English Channel.
Born 1920 in Bucklow, Cheshire. Son of William Rawsthorn (or Ross) Gaskell and Florence Helen (Melland) Gaskell of Auchenbrack, Tynron who married in 1915 in Bucklow.
Missing in Action/Lost at Sea on 11 April 1941 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.

ORD. SEA. P. H. GASKELL, R.N

Peter Holbrook Gaskell – age 20 – Able Seaman (P/JX 234670) H.M.S. Somali, Royal Navy.
The destroyer “Somali” was escorting an Artic convoy returning from Russia when she was torpedoed by the German submarine U-703 on 20 September 1942. She was hit in Engine Room and sustained major damage. Five of ship’s company were killed and four seriously injured. Despite a sever list she was taken in tow by the destroyer H.M.S. “Ashanti” and many of ship's company were transferred to the Rescue Ship H.M. Trawler “Lord Middleton”. Four days later in deteriorating weather and after 420 mile under tow the “Somali” broke in two and 77 men, including Peter, were lost when ship had to be abandoned.
Born 1922 in Bucklow, Cheshire. Son of William Rawsthorne (or Ross) Gaskell and Florence Helen (Melland) Gaskell of Auchenbrack, Tynron who married in 1915 in Bucklow.
Missing in Action/Lost at Sea on 24 September 1942 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.

William Rawsthorne Gaskell was born in 1884 in Prescott, Lancashire. In 1911, as William Ross Gaskell, he was training as a farmer at Green's Farm at Carnwath, Lanarkshire and by 1915 he was living and farming at Auchenbrack, Tynron. He served as a Second Lieutenant and Captain in the KOSB during the First War World, landing in France in January 1915. His brother, Flight Sub-Lieutenant Holbrook Lance Gaskell, age 19, of the Royal Naval Air Service attached to 47 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps, was killed on 2 May 1917 in Salonica and is buried in Sarigol Military Cemetery, Kriston, Greece.
They were the sons of Lt. Col. James Bellhouse Gaskell and of Harriette May (Melland) Gaskell, of "Roseleigh," Woolton, Liverpool.

SGT. R. McKAY, R.A.S.C.
Robert McKay – age 25 – Sergeant (T/120847) No.4 Petrol Tin Factory Operating Company, Royal Army Service Corps.
Robert had served his apprenticeship as a draper in Thornhill before taking a post in a large department store in London. He enlisted early in the war and served with the RASC in France, in Egypt and in the North African campaign where he was in charge of a large petrol filling installation. He became ill in Algiers and was evacuated home to the Stobhill Hospital in Glasgow where he died of cancer.
Born 1919 in Penpont, Dumfriesshire. Son of John and Janet Johnstone (Gourlay) McKay of Hallscaur Farm and of Mael Mhor, Penpont who had married in 1909 in Tynron.
Died on Service on 18 March 1944 and buried in Penpont Parish Churchyard. (CWG)
Also named on the Penpont Parish War Memorial and on an individual memorial in Penpont Church.
