I hadn't come across 296 Squadron before, an Airborne Forces Squadron responsible for towing troop gliders.

Wigtownshire Free Press ((/12/1943): Mr and Mrs John T Wyllie, St Ninians, Whithorn, have received intimation of the death on active service of their elder son, Flying Officer James Wyllie. A former pupil of Merchiston Castle School he joined the RAF three years ago. After preliminary training in Canada he was on active service in Tunisia, Sicily and Italy. He had recently visited Whithorn while on leave. Flying Officer Wyllie, who was 21, was a young man of promising abilities and of a very likeable disposition and his death will occasion deep regret.
