This is not listed on UKNIWM and is different from the listed memorial 44437 (which is inside the church).

This memorial is at GR NX 696 699 and is outside Parton church at the side of Loch Ken.

I am still trying to find information on T. Gracie 5th KOSB - he's not included in my battalion records and there is no match on CWGC or SNWM. It's interesting that his unit inscription is a different style to the others.

I think I would tend to ignore the regiment (for T Gracie), both because of the type of font and also because the church memorial http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=1811 has no regiment for him. Added to the fact that there is no first name either, I think this means that there were no relatives living in the area when the memorial came to be erected. That may mean that he worked in the area prior to the war but actually came from somewhere else and is also commemorated on their memorial (Dumfries, Dalbeattie and Kirkcolm come to mind).
I don't think there are any Gracie gravestones in Parton churchyard either.

Thank you very much. That saves me going off on a wild goose chase. Strange that Parton is listed as residence of next-of-kin yet, in addition to the wrong unit info on the memorial, there is no mention of his death in the local press and no details were returned for the county roll of honour (highly unusual for a casualty).

One of the men listed here is Corporal A S Watson 6th Scottish Horse.

There were only three regiments of Scottish Horse so I was wondering does anyone know why his listing would have 6th Scottish Horse?

A S Watson has an individual memorial in Parton church http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=1780&highlight= where is unit is stated as 3rd Scottish Horse which I would presume would be correct. However the church memorial at Parton also shows him as 6th Bn.

Thanks for identifying him. Just to complicate mattters he died serving in the 10th Camerons which was formed from the Lovat Scouts and some men from the Scottish Horse.

Regarding Adam Watson's service with the Scottish Horse.
SNWM has him as formerly 611 SH (is this where 6TH came from?) whereas his MIC has 6728 SH.
The Stewartry RoH says that he served at Dardanelles and Salonica.
The 1/3rd Bn Scottish Horse fought with the 1/1st Bn as dismounted troops at Gallipoli. In October 1916 the 1/3rd went to the MGC while one company went to the Lovat Scouts who were forming the 10th Bn Cameron Highlanders.
Adam was killed while serving with the 10th Camerons in Salonika.

Interesting theory about 611 being mistaken for 6th. It's hard to come up with another reason why he should be listed as 6th since he was in the 1/3rd or 3rd Scottish Horse or the 10th Camerons. No unit with 6th in it.

All of the men detailed below are also listed on a memorial inside Parton Parish Church and are on a Roll of Honour in Parton Village Hall.
These memorials cover the area of Parton Parish which is adjacent to Loch Ken.
Men from the eastern part of the Parish appear on the War Memorial in Corsock Village.

L-CPL. GEO. ALEXANDER, 6th G.HRS

George Alexander, Lance Corporal (S/11786) 6th/7th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. Age 21.
Born 1896 Monifieth, Forfarshire. (Angus) Son of George and Catherine (Bruce) Alexander of Tintum, Parton. Enlisted November 1915. Killed at Cambrai.
Missing in action 23 March 1918 and listed on the Arras Memorial, France.

CPL. BOYD, CANADIAN INF.

Peter Boyd, Corporal (434182) 5th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Saskatchewan Regiment) Age 37.
Born 1879 in Old Luce, Wigtownshire. Son of Samuel and Margaret (Loch) Boyd of Overlaggan, Parton. Husband of Elizabeth McVitie (Wright) Boyd who he married in 1905 in Buittle, Kirkcudbrightshire. Enlisted January 1915 in Calgary, Alberta. Killed at Vimy Ridge.
Killed in action 9 April 1917 and buried in Nine Elms Military Cemetery, Thelus, France.

CO. SERGT. M. CLANACHAN, 6th AUS.INF.

Matthew Clanachan, Company Sergeant Major (915) 6th Battalion, Australian Infantry. Age 32.
Born 1884 in Kirkcudbright. Son of James and Jessie (Blane) Clanachan of Parton. Husband of Mary (Solley) Clanachan of Castle Douglas who he married in 1910 in Dumfries when Matthew was a chauffeur at Airds, Parton. He enlisted in August 1914 in Melbourne, Victoria claiming 8 years service with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Wounded in the head at Gallipoli on 26 August he was evacuated to No.15 General Hospital in Alexandria where he died.
Died of wounds 6 September 1915 and buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.

GNR. A.B. DAVIDSON, R.G.A.

Alexander David Black Davidson, Gunner (337416) 123rd Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Age 40.
Born 1877 in Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Alexander and Agnes (Muirhead) Davidson. In 1911 Agnes and her two sons were living in Parton. Husband of Lillie E. (Lawrence) Davidson of Sunderland who he married in 1912 in Sunderland.
Killed in action 3 December 1917 and buried in the Level Crossing Cemetery, Fampoux, France.

PTE. T. GRACIE, 5th K.O.S.B

Thomas Jardine Gracie, Private (32293) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Age 30.
Born 1887 in Dumfries. Son of John and Jane (Twentyman) Gracie. Husband of Mary (Little) Gracie who he married in 1907 in Dumfries.
Thomas was a cattle-man at Cogarth Farm, Parton (where he lived with his wife and five children) when he enlisted in January 1917.
Missing in action 28 March 1918 and listed on the Arras Memorial, France.

James Murray Hannah, Lance Corporal (S/11551) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. Age 33.
Born 1884 in Girthon Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Peter and Jane (McLellan) Hannah of Parton. Husband of Jeannie McKeand (Miller) Hannah of Thornhill, Dumfriesshire who he married in 1905 in Mochrum Parish, Wigtownshire. James was a shepherd at Closeburn, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted in February 1916. Shot by a sniper near Monchy-le-Preux.
Killed in action 16 June 1917 and listed on the Arras Memorial. Also listed on the Morton Parish War Memorial in Thornhill and on a memorial in Parton Parish Church.

PTE. W. HUNTER, 5th K.O.S.B.

Walter Hunter, Private (2964) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 20.
Born 1895 in Twynholm, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of John and Agnes (Stuart or Stewart) Hunter of Drumrash, Parton.
Killed in action 12 September 1915 and buried in Redoubt Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.
