Private Robert Rennie, Scottish Horse had me puzzled until I was reading the Stirling Roll of Honour (thanks to whoever put the link to it on the Forum - Delboy, I think). There is a Robert RANNIE, private, Scottish Horse, 5 Viewfield Place, Stirling, which is but a hop and a step from the original North Parish Church.

Thank you, Adam; another piece of the jigsaw in place!
The last piece of the jigsaw (as far as my research is concerned) centred on why a Pitsligo loon was in Stirling. The Stirling Observer came up trumps. An article about him after his death (at Alexandria Hospital as the result of an attack of dysentery) states that he "had been employed in the Lands Valuation Department at Stirling for the last three years."
