I recently met Ann Shukman who is Margaret Fairweather's daughter. She had not previously known of this memorial and so is grateful for the work of this project in bringing it to her attention. She is in the process of erecting a memorial at the crash site near Malpas in Cheshire and I hope will inform us when this is done.
The grave of Margaret and her husband Douglas is on SWGP at http://scottishwargraves.phpbbweb.com/viewtopic.php?t=491&start=0&mforum=scottishwargraves

I have just come across this and am not sure if this stream is still active.
2nd Lt J Stevenson was from Kirkwall, Orkney and was killed in a flying accident at the No1. School of Aerial Gunnery which was based at what is now the Turnberry golf course.
The pilot was Sgt. CWH Bowers was was my mothers elder brother (my uncle.)
Sgt Christoper William Henry Bowers was born in Washbrooke Heath, Birmingham on 7th September 1892 and joined the RFC in 1913. He spent most of his service with No.2 Squadron.
He was killed Turnberry on 1st May 1917 flying FE2b No 6975 - 120hp Beardmore. The gunner was 2nd Lt J Stevenson from Kirkwall, Orkney (also killed)
Bowers service No. was 932 and pilot's licence is no. 3960 issued on 8th December 1916.
The F.S. Form 559 (Casualty Card) transcript say, under remarks, "Loss of flying speed produced by a very sharp turn causing the machine to stall at insufficient height for recovery from nose dive." "nose dived from 30ft. Burst into flames."
Hope this is of interest. |
