A memorial was erected by the people of Irvine to the memory of Bryce Gulliland. He was a native of Irvine and had been press ganged into the navy, where he rose to be 1st lieutenant on HMS Royal Sovereign. He died, aged 36, on 21st October 1805 at the Battle of Trafalgar. As the memorial states, “He fell at his post, in his Country’s cause, and with Nelson.”

HMS Royal Sovereign was a 100-gun first rate ship of the line which served as the flagship of Admiral Collingwood at the Battle of Trafalgar and was the first ship of the fleet in action that day.
From Wikipedia:
Royal Sovereign lost one lieutenant, her master, one lieutenant of marines, two midshipman, 29 seamen and 13 marines killed, and two lieutenants, one lieutenant of marines, one master's mate, four midshipman, her boatswain, 69 seamen and 16 marines wounded. |
