James Marquis is listed on the Balquhidder War Memorial, Perthshire.
He attested on 2nd March, 1916 - Pvt. 18187, 1st Battalion Black Watch - and served in France between 8th March and 25th April, 1917 being discharged on 18th July that year being no longer physically fit for war service.
He died on 13th December, 1917 at Hillside Home, Perth (usual address Corrycharmaig, Killin) from Phthisis Pulmonary.
Details sent to Jim Grant to establish if a case can be submitted to CWGC.

Mark

Have checked out details and can put a case forward for you to MOD / CWGC regarding James Marquis in the New Year. Althought not clear from the service paperwork I am confident a link can be made to his deceased parents which might appear in the CWGC record.

Can you check to see if he is buried locally to Balquhidder?

Well done in finding him.

Mark - I see his "usual residence" is Killin. Might he be related to Duncan and John Marquis of Greenbank, Killin who are on Rolls of Honour there?
Might be buried in a family plot there????

Ken,
Good shout. Must be in some way related, quite an unusual surname.

I am not sure what happened here. There were a number I submitted to Jim Grant but with his illness and untimely passing I don't know if they ever went forward. I will have to reprise them at some point but, as usual, getting time to do everything is a problem.

The IFCP can be messaged via their "contact form" at
http://www.infromthecold.org/

I've found that the briefest details (name, rank & number) is enough for them to say whether there is an "active" case or whether no further action is possible or whether they have no knowledge of the casualty.

It would be good idea to get in touch with the Stirling Cemeteries Office - both Balquidder and Killin come under their care.

If the place of burial is found (Section if applicable and Lair No), then that can be another form of verification as it should confirm name, address and age. With a bit of luck, the Lair Record might also include other individuals buried in the same lair, helping to verify it's definately the right person/family.

You might have to end up doing a 'mini' family tree for the Marquis family to see if all 3 men were related.

Stirling are usually VERY good at responding. (I'm on the phone to them all the time!!) Laughing

James Marquis was not in the system. I have today submitted the necessary paperwork to Terry Denham. He has forwarded this case for consideration. I am awaiting any possible burial details in Perthshire.

Unfortunately not Ken. I tried Perth & Kinross, Anne did Stirling and nothing turned up.
