"Company Sergeant-Major Walker, 1st Seaforth Highlanders, who was killed in action three weeks ago in the trenches in Belgium was 33 years old, and a native of Cavers district, Roxburghshire. He had seen 16 years service, went through the South African War, and before being sent to France was in India with his regiment. His sister, Mrs John Brunton, resides in Jedburgh."

LC WILLIAM ARMSTRONG, 7th S.H.
William Armstrong – age 23 – Lance Corporal (S/2172) 7th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
William had worked on the Cavers Estate and at Gala House, Galashiels before moving to Winchester. He enlisted from there and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but he was killed four months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1892 at Cavers Knowes in Kirkton. Son of William and Janet (Walker) Armstrong of Cavers Knowes and of Westmiddles, Cavers.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Hawick Roll of Honour.


JAMES BALLANTYNE, 10th S.R.
James Ballantyne – age 22 – Lance Corporal (37716) 10th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Born 1894 in Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire. Son of Edward and Beatrice Helen (Thomson) Ballantyne of Kirkton and of Clerklands, Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire.
Died of Wounds on 17 August 1917 and buried in Brandhoek New Military Cemetery No.3
Also named on the Lilliesleaf Parish War Memorial and on the Hawick Roll of Honour.


THOMAS BLACKIE, 7/8th K.O.S.B.
Note: some records show the family name as BLAIKIE.
Thomas Blackie – age 31 – Lance Corporal (29934) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas was employed on the Cavers Estate when he enlisted in the 4th KOSB in November 1914. He was posted to the 7th/8th in France in 1916. Thomas had been on leave in February 1918 and had returned to his battalion a month before he was killed.
Born 1887 in Earlestown, Berwickshire as Blackie. Son of Robert and Janet (Wylie) Blackie of Dunfermline, Fife who married in 1886 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire as Blaikie. Husband of Janet Fergusson (Scott) Blackie who he married in 1908 in Earlston, Berwickshire as Blaikie. Grandson of Mrs Wylie of Hassendean Bank, Denholm, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 28 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Hawick Roll of Honour.

PTE ROBERT FLEMING, 4th K.O.S.B.
Robert Fleming – age 22 – Private (350255) 15th Battalion (1st Glasgow) Highland Light Infantry.
Robert was employed at Upper Tofts Farm in Kirkton when he enlisted in the 2/4th King's Own Scottish Borderers in Hawick in October 1915. He was posted as Private (201143) the 1st KOSB in France but was transferred to the 15th HLI. Robert died in the 3rd Canadian Stationary Hospital at Gezaincourt.
Born 1896 at Sunderland Hall, Selkirk. Son of the late Margaret Fleming and of Robert Fleming, shepherd at Hartwoodmyres, Selkirk.
Died of Wounds on 24 June 1918 and buried in Gezaincourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme. France.
Also named on the Selkirk War Memorial.


GEORGE LAUDER, 2nd S.R.
George Lauder – age 29 – Private (40850) 1st Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
George was a gardener at Bemersyde House, St. Boswells, Roxburghshire when he enlisted in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in September 1915. He was posted as Private (21563) to the 6th KOSB in France but was transferred to the 2nd Scottish Rifles before joining the 1st Battalion. He was wounded in April 1918 and again in October when he died in the 3rd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station at Manancourt.
Born 1888 in Ewes, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late William Lauder (died 1910) and of Mary (Milligan) Lauder (died 1912) of Kirkton.
Brother of Jean Lauder of Highchesters Cottage, Roberton, Roxburghshire who he named as his legatee.
Died of Wounds on 11 October 1918 and buried in Rocquigny-Equancourt Road British Cemetery, Manancourt, France.
Also named on the Roberton Parish War Memorial.


FRANK McTAVISH, 4th K.O.S.B.
Frank McTavish – age 29 – Private (6802) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1901 Frank, aged 15, was a woodman at Cavers and was a forester when he enlisted in Galashiels in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1886 in Fogo, Berwickshire as Francis. Son of John and Margaret (Lillie) McTavish of Manse Cottage, Cavers.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Hawick Roll of Honour and on the Galashiels Roll of Honour.

PETER PRINGLE, R.G.A.
Thought to be:
Peter Pringle – age 21 – Private (32383) 13th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Born 1895 in Wilton, Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of George Pringle and Catherine Landells (Mills) Pringle of "Kaimend," Kirkton.
Missing in Action on 22 August 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Hawick Roll of Honour, as Peter M. Pringle, Royal Scots.


SM THOMAS RIDDLE, R.F.A.
Thomas Riddle – age 34 – Corporal (84511) “A” Battery, 112th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
Thomas was a carter when he enlisted as Gunner (25347) in the Royal Horse Artillery in July 1902. He was posted to “X” Battery in India in December 1904 and returned to the UK to “I” Battery in October 1913. He was discharged from the army at the end of his term of service on 28 July 1914 but re-enlisted as Gunner (84511) on 11 August 1914. He landed in France with his battery as a Sergeant in September 1915 and was serving with the 25th Division's Trench Mortar Battery when his dug-out was hit by a shell.
Born 1882 in Cavers. Son of the late Jane (Waldie) Riddle (died 1889) and of Robert Riddle of Midgard, Cavers, and step son of Elizabeth (Robson) Riddle who Robert married in 1893 in Wilton, Roxburghshire. Husband of Annie Jane (Kilgour) Riddle who he married in 1915 in Glasgow.
Killed in Action on 27 June 1917 and buried in Kandahar Farm Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Hawick Roll of Honour.


THOMAS SIBBALD. [Regiment not inscribed]
Thomas Sibbald – age 26 – Gunner (110631) 218th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
Thomas was a shepherd when he enlisted in December 1915. He was mobilised in August 1916 and landed with his battery at Le Havre in January 1917.
Born 1891 in Kirkton. Son of Thomas and Mary Ann (Cowan) Sibbald of Deanbrae, Kirkton.
His sisters both died during the previous month, Isabella Calvert Sibbald, age 21, on 5 June and Jane Page Sibbald, age 19, on 29 June.
Killed in Action on 24 July 1917 and buried in Bus House Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Hawick Roll of Honour.


CSM ROBERT WALKER, SEAFORTH H.R.D.S.
Robert Walker – age 33 – Company Sergeant Major (6769) 1st Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Robert had enlisted in about 1899 and had served as a Lance Corporal with the 2nd Seaforths in the South African War in 1901and 1902. He was transferred to the 1st Seaforths in India in December 1902 and he was with the battalion at Agra when they set off for France, landing at Marseilles in October 1914. Robert was killed at Neuve Chapelle and his remains were re-interred at Laventine after the war.
Born 1881 in Cavers. Son of the late Divina (Telford) Walker of Cavers (died 1893) and of the late James Walker (died 1910) of Mervinslaw, Jedburgh.
Killed in Action on 15 April 1915 and buried in Royal Irish Rifles Graveyard, Laventie, France.
Also named on the Hawick Roll of Honour.
