From the variety of information to hand I have updated the civic/parish lists for Shetland and linked accordingly.

Without any first hand knowledge there could be others at locations presently unknown.

I have a feeling that some parishes have been disected and area/districts have their own memorials.

For Northmalvine, for instance, they have Ollaberry covering the east, Eshaness - the west, North Roe & Lochend, the northern part. Would there be a memorial in Sullom area covering the south end?

Mark

Mark,

There are some dodgy refs in the list. For example, there is no civic memorial in Scalloway. I asked various people and the museum there. Apart from the one in the methodist church and the various Shetland Bus memorials, there isn't one. I passed through Brae many times and asked several people - they couldn't think of one and thought that the one at Voe covered it. Another dodgy one is 'Sellafirth, Gutcher School' - there is not a lot at Gutcher, apart from the ferry terminal. I wonder if the one I photographed through the window at Sellafirth church is the one? West Burrafirth is such a scattered community - I couldn't find a methodist church or a chapel.

Sandsting & Aithsting? Northmavine?

I was frustrated a few times - the parish church in Lerwick is having a complete renovation and the plaques have been moved. The Rechabite memorial is in the museum, but not on show, and they could not produce it for me in the time I had there.

Ah well, an excuse to go back another time, I suppose.

Unless Mark lifts them all from some website........

Ian,

No, that was about the lot from Shetlopedia and ones we didn't have. Better photos of some, to include names, would be better.

The details in the list in bold highlights were from Adam's original list. I think they could go too unless there is information to suggest memorials exist. I know Adam had a huge job doing the lists and I think any/every reference was being added so it was covered.

Aithsting, Standsting and Northmalvine are all/were parishes on Shetland. I think that perhaps the churches at the two former locations may have something.

I've had another look at the memorial at Voe (Delting Parish) & its description on the UKNIWM. It has to be the one also given as 'Brae'. I think this has been duplicated with different references.

Meant to say. If there are any references/naming in the lists that are completely wrong or should be changed please let me know. Thanks

Getting a list for Shetland was a bit of a scunner because it is so far away and we didn't have a local on the forum to advise us.

I based it on the RBL list, the UKNIWM databse which isn't always accurate, some Shetland FHS Monumental Inscription publications which included war memorials in graveyards and also references to memorials I could find on the internet.

I have no local knowledge of Shetland and it may be that some of these are duplicates. Remember though that quite often in small rural areas the local memorial is in the churchso it might double up as church and community memorial.

Cheers

Adam

SHETLAND — A memorial to the thirty-eight men belonging to the parish of Tingwall, including Scalloway, Shetland, has just been unveiled. The memorial consists of an artistic column of Aberdeen granite, and is situated at the entrance to the churchyard in the centre of the lovely Valley of Tingwall. A service was first held in the church, at which the Rev. Wm. Browne delivered an appropriate address. Headed by a piper playing "Lochaber No More," the company then walked towards the memorial, which was unveiled by Major MacDougall. The names, of the dead having been read over, the "Last Post" was sounded by Seaman Geo. Hay, R.N.R. Wreaths were thereafter placed at the front of the column.

The Tingwall Memorial included Scalloway. I've removed Scalloway from the list.

Aberdeen Family History has a large volume of the men from Shetland and it's title is Shetland's Roll of Honour.
Most entries have a photo and gives info of rank, military service, where and when killed also age.
I could do look-ups. Anne

Wink I see that you have made a mistake with the WW 1 memorial in Sandwick. You have the same on Sandwick , Orkney, that's the right place Wink
Its a good page you have here, lot of good info. I'm the one who is mostly dealing with the memorials on http://shetlopedia.com/Category:War_Memorials and finally started to do something about them again...: Rolling Eyes

Hello Oddrun, thanks for the info. Maybe you can assist with information etc. on the Orkney/Shetland side.
I take it the WW1/WW2 memorials posted are Sandwick, Orkney ?

There is a Sandwick Parish on Shetland - are there any memorials there ? - Help!!

Well, the WW 2 memorial is right, that's erected on the wall of Sandwick Kirk in Shetland, I've taken the picture myself Smile , but the WW1 memorial must be in Orkney, because it is not the Sandwick Kirk I know, or any other kirk in shetland. I've seen most of them...And I have not found any WW 1 memorial in Sandwick...Confusing, isn't it ? Rolling Eyes
You can find all the info I have if you click on the link I added on my first post, and you are free to use it all. I have quite a bit more to add there, I'm working with it...And I will try to help if there is anything you want to know.
Orkney is a white spot on the map for me Embarassed
Cheers

Well, you've got a local now. Very Happy
Shetlander born and bred, although I live in Norway now with my partner Oddrun . But I have access to a lot of info and this project really interests me, so feel free to ask questions (PM's work best for me as I always read them) . I'll have to spend a bit of time reading the pages to see what you have, then maybe I can add a bit, or correct a bit.
I'll do what I can to help.

Kind Regards,
Robbie
