Southern Reporter 8/11/1945: Notification has been received of the posthumous award of the Military Medal to CSM J S Lees, Royal Marines, son of Mrs George Lees, Tweedholm Avenue, Walkerburn. CSM Lees was a Regular, and had been on active service in various theatres. He was twice wounded. He died from injuries in an accident in North West Europe on June 4 last. No details of the citation have yet been notified, but a letter has been received which says that, "by his courageous actions and leadership he has added lustre to the corps, and we, his comrades, would like to say how proud we are of his achievement".

Southern Reporter 1/11/1945: The death has taken place at Edenhall Cemetery, Musselburgh, of Private T H Lees, 8th Royal Scots, who was severely wounded in July 1944 in the fighting near Caen. Private Lees is the second son of Mrs George Lees, Tweedholm Avenue, Walkerburn, to die as a result of war wounds. His two surviving brothers have also been wounded, one seriously. Private Lees leaves a wife and baby girl.

Both are also named on Walkerburn War Memorial.
