In his book, "Life and Times in the Upper Tweed Valley", Andrew Lorimer, who spent much of his life in the area, recalls recalls William Thorburn: "At Hearthstane [Lorimer's home farm] we came face to face quite soon with the sadness and sacrifices which had to be endured. Our employer's eldest son, Billy Thorburn, was in Canada on a sheep ranch when the call for volunteers was made. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force at once and arrived at Hearthstane on embarkation leave. We boys admired his uniform and the ease with which he spoke to everyone and looked forward to the time he would take over the farm. It seemed that he had hardly left for France before the news came that he had been killed in action. The rest of the Thorburn family were soon involved, with Jamie flying, Robert at sea and Vincent in the army."
