Saw this article, couldn't find him on CWGC/SNWM.

Here's what the d.c. says, not really a marry up of the story being blown up and found he died of diabetes?

There's 24 Pte. David Smiths pf the Seaforths with MiC's if anyone has ancestry access and fancies trawling through them?

btw, there's no David Smiths on the Stranraer, Girvan or Portpatrick memorials.

Derek.

Derek

Have found his record which confirms he was discharged due to the cause of death. He was a Regular from 1902 who was re-engaged and then mobilized in Aug 1914. His disablity originated at Messines in Feb 1915 where he was buried by a shell explosion.
He was discharged the day before he died. His father was at Portpatrick in 1902.

If you send me the DC I can put him forward to for you.

Well done in finding him.

Derek/Jim - just to avoid any confusion, I think the Herald has got GIRVAN wrong.
The DC gives his usual residence as 44 Harmomy Row, GOVAN and he appears in the Glasgow Roll of Honour at that address.

I have asked a pal at the D&G FHS to check the MI's for Portpatrick Cemetery to confirm that he is there (and where).

Yes Ken,

Good spot, likely a typo, Govan makes more sense.

Derek

Thanks for the DC, this man's case is now in the system.
He died at his sisters home in Stranraer on 25th May, the day after he was officialy discharged from the Army. On attesting he declared he was born there.
He lived at 44 Harmony Row, Govan. As Ken suggests " Girvan " is a typical press error.
Well done in finding him.

Ken, if you find his grave can you e-mail me direct with full details.

Jim - We are now fairly sure that he is not buried in Portpatrick. (there's nothing on the MI's)
I had assumed that he would be as his mother had died there earlier.
I have found a newspaper report on his death but got thrown out of the library before I could check the microfiche
It was lunch time Smile
I'll let you know.

Ken

Thanks, any info will be helpful. I am checking in Glasgow. It appears he lived there from, at least, 1907 when he maried at Govan.
Have written you direct.

Ah! i missed this notification.

Glad to see David Smith added.

I received much help and guidance from the late Jim Grant over the years with "non-comm" cases.

Derek

Yes, Jim was a stalwart of the IFTC project. He'll be sorely missed by them.

Thanks
