Within the Hirsel Estate, by Coldstream, stands this obelisk erected on 1st November 1784, to a Captain killed at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse.

This makes it the oldest individual war memorial in Berwickshire.

(And I would imagine it must also be one of the oldest in Scotland?).

Captain Home was the son of the Earl of Home.

Britain won the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, but at a cost:

It wasn't the weather today for traipsing up tracks and through woods but there are 2 images on the 'Geograph' site, which I link below.

Please don't include photos from another site unless we have permission to do so. There could be copyright issues involved, and I don't want to run the risk of this site getting into bother.

Ok right, I've changed the title.

I have also removed the images and left the links in, though I understood that Geograph is an opensource site with a Creative Commons policy that means people can reproduce the images elsewhere provided they provide a link and credit, and don't hotlink the photo. That's why I looked on there to see if there were any pictures of the obelisk when I'd given up trying to reach it due to the rain earlier, as I'd thought they could be reproduced. I tried to do as eg. the Edinburgh College of Art Memorial is on here though I see the box didn't appear.

Kenny

Thanks. Yes the Edinburgh College of Art does have the copyright box. I wish I could remember how I got that. It may be that it was the one Stephen Fry used? Perhaps there will be something similar for thismemorial. The alternative would be to contact the person who took them and ask their permission for use here.

Thanks

Adam
