This thread is now solely for discussion of potential memorials not covered by the Project in the Perth & Kinross area.

Note : With the redrawing of boundaries in 1996 some of the memorials in the Kinross area may come under Fife in the UNKNIWM database. UKNIWM still uses the old Regions rather than the present Unitary Authorities to split Scotland up.

Adam,
1. Where did you obtain the war memorial list for Perth & Kinross? Do you have any idea when it was put together?

2. I don't know about other areas but the changing boundaries of Perthshire has, for me, proved a challenge. I initially started off using the Golden Book and traditional Perthshire places but huge areas were taken into Stirling e.g Callander, Aberfoyle, Crianlarich, Dunblane.......and on and on. I've moved some posts to this area now. Areas of Clackmannashire, Angus & Fife have also had their part to play plus we have gained from Angus, City of Dundee and taken in Kinross-shire. No wonder they did/do call it the Big County!!

I have removed the following from the Perth & Kinross List and shown where, I think Confused , they should be. If this is confirmed could they be moved accordingly?

KILMADOCK (STIRLING)
KINCARDINE (FIFE)
LECROPT (STIRLING)
PORT OF MENTEITH (STIRLING)
STRATHFILLAN (STIRLING)
LOGIE (STIRLING)

It was put together by me last year as part of a list I was compiling for the whole of Scotland. I took the information from various sources such as the UKNIWM database, the RBL list (Jim McGinlay has posted a copy he transcribed), the Scotsman newspaper from the 1920s, books like Derek Boorman's 'At the Going Down of the Sun' and anything I could find on the web.

I also found two lists of Scottish Parishes and assuming each parish would have at least one memorial I included them. I started with a list of about 6,000 entries but whittled it down by taking out duplicates to about 2,500. That's way short of the 5,500+ total I estimate we should finally get for Scotland (based on one tenth of the total number expected by the UKNIWM)

That was a big problem in compiling a list for Scotland, trying to work out where memorials should be. Perthshire was probably the biggest problem of the lot since it is so large and the boundaries have changed so much over the past thirty years.

If I was in doubt I used Google maps to find out which authority towns fell into. I didn't check every one before posting the lists on the forum though, I was relying on local knowledge to help out.

I will double check the ones you listed and move them to their correct place.

Regards

I checked the folowing entries

STRATHFILLAN (STIRLING) a parish covered by Crianlarich and Tyndrum
KILMADOCK (STIRLING) A parish, covered by Doune
PORT OF MENTEITH (STIRLING) moved to Stirling list
LECROPT (STIRLING) moved to Stirling list

KINCARDINE (FIFE) already in Fife list.

Logie (Stirling) is already in the Stirling list but I also found a total of seven Logies on Google local so I assume I had Logie (Perth) down as well

Logie, Fife
Logie, Moray
Logie, Perth and Kinross
Logie, Kirriemuir, Angus DD8
Logie, Angus
Logie, Cupar, Fife KY15
Logie, Stirling, FK9

Thats mind boggling - definately a huge task and not easy. To be honest in doing Perthshire I've learned so much more about the parishes and places myself.

Thanks for firming up and the list.

Logie seems to be one of those very difficult ones - from a Gazetteer 1882 it states LOGIE, parish in Stirlingshire, Clackmannanshire, and Perthshire

Wikipedia: Following the recommendations of the boundary commission appointed under the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889, Culross and Tulliallan were transferred to Fife, and the entire parish of Logie was included in Stirlingshire.

There are wee places named Logie in various parts of Perthshire.

Yes, It's amazing what you find out when you have to start matching towns to parishes and look them up on a map.

I have tidied up the Perthshire listings and linked them to the relevant threads.
I am seeking advice on the following, do they stay or go?, and thoughts would be welcome.

HARCOURT HOLCOMBE
D. ROBERTSON
CHARLES STUART

The above three are at Dunkeld and there has been discussion previously. They have been given WM status, or a number anyway, by the UKNIWM. However, they are graves and given that there is a sister site they could be posted there at some point.

ANDREW DOUIE
ROBER DOUIE
FRANK LEWIS DE SALES LA TERRIERE
SIR JOHN MCDONALD
JOHN MALCOLM
SIR ROBERT SANDEMAN

Do the above actually qualify for the forum/project?

JOHN SIMPSON

John Simpson was entered as he is a V.C winner?

SCOTTISH HORSE BLAIR ATHOLL
CRIEFF, THE PRETORIA BAR

Yes/No?

..........Finally, Adam

73RD HIGHLANDERS (PERTH PARK) ?

Any further info.

Yes remove them if they are graves rather than memorials

Still a debateable point, leave for now.

I say yes. The sign has a scene from the Boer War painted on it. If you ignore the fact that it is a bar and if you saw a painting of a Boer War soldier with Pretoria under it on the wall of a building would that be considered a memorial?

I'm guessing this is a mix up with one of the 90th LI memorials and can be removed.

Cheers

Each of the small villages of Powmill, Blairingone and Crook of Devon - all in Fossoway Parish, Kinross-shire, and a stones throw from each other - have, what I interpret, to be Civic Memorials.
I've updated the list accordingly.

As part of Perth's city remodeling with the planned destruction of the City hall this press article mentions the relocation of a war memorial to beside St John's Kirk.
Anyone able to identify which memorial this would be? Aren't the Perth and church memorials all inside the building?

(from article)
"...A site near the kirk has been pinpointed to re-locate the war memorial."

Article
