Due to the upsurge in satnavs which take postcodes could we have a list of memorials within Scotland with the postcode added or a postcode to the nearest street to which the memorial stands.
Also in the lists of Shires memorial there are the ones which have had their photos taken and placed on the forum. Could the names of ones left to be photographed within each Shire be placed at the bottom of the thread. That way you will avoid people the possibility of members covering a lot of miles on the same weekend and duplicationg photos for nothing.
Just a thought

The eventual plan is to have a link to every memorial which has been photographed in the Shire thread. So any thathave been photographed will behighlighted in blue.
This, however, is a time-consuming process. Bear with us, we'll get to it eventually. |

It is a VERY time consuming process.
I bought a GPS system for my bike last week and am still getting to grips with it.
The postcode idea is a good one but how do we find the nearest postcodes or other information that a GPS system could work on?
Any ideas?

I confess I have never used satnav, I much prefer to read a map and various online map sites use OS references. If you look up a map, you can find so much more about the surrounding area, and of course UKNIWM does not have postcodes, only OS Map Refs.
As far as I know, almost no memorials will have a postcode because a postcode applies to postal delivery addresses. I concede that these usually tie up with a physical location but not always - one company I worked for had a postcode which was a PO box in town and this was over half a mile from where the office was physically located.
I guess that is a standard fault with GPS systems - presumably we don't stand much chance of getting GPS systems changed  so we need a website where you can convert from OS Ref to postcode.
For anyone who needs a postcode for their satnav, I think it should be fairly simple to get it from multimap, just input the OS Map Ref (without spaces) then scroll down to see the postcode. I tried it for NX 870 666 (Kirkgunzean) (and omit the blanks) and got DG2 8xx - is that good enough for a satnav system? |

It is a long slog. I forgot to save a lot of links to the Edinburgh list yesterday and lost an hour's work. Very frustrating.
We will get there in the end but in the mean time I'd suggest posting a message saying what memorials you are planning to photograph before you go in case someone already has them waiting to be uploaded.

The Multimap website also gives Longitude and Latitude so I suspect using the satnav you should be able to get a precise figure for any given location.
I will try it out today and see what happens.
