War Memorial Contractors

Hi
The Neilston War memorial association are now near the stage of putting our War memorial design out for pricing and tendering bids. Can any of the site members recommend a contractor/memorial contractors' to use that would under take this and enable us to cut out the middle men.

Thanks
Matt

I would try the War Memorials Trust to see if they can recommend anyone. Also worth checking out their helpsheet on new memorials if you have not already done so. http://www.warmemorials.org/uploads/publications/49.pdf

Douglas Swan & Sons of Kirkcudbright have done a grand job of refurbishing the Dalbeattie War Memorial - see the page 6 of

Recent new war memorials often feel to me like they are too much like modern gravestones aping 100 year old designs e.g. polished granite Celtic cross with gold lettering.

Whilst this is probably a good option for cost and durability I think this is an opportunity in Neilston to approach it like Glenrothes or Leith Academy WW2 and to use an alternative.

Of course cost, and perhaps a wish locally to use a traditional design, may dictate a Celtic Cross but in that case rather than the polished granite maybe it would be nice to see the rough granite finish used on many of our older war memorials.

Another option may be the Co-operative Masonry / Memorial Unit at Shieldhall in Glasgow.

Are there any ex-servicemen/ women who have set themselves up as memorial stonemasons?

That's a very good question Jim, it would be interesting to find that out. I'll ask on Twitter from the SMRG account.
