| Hi I was hopeing that someone might be able to let me know what happened to a soldier named Martin Holloran .His name is on the War Memorial at Leavengrove park in Dumbarton.I have some muster roll details but thats about it.Martin was 21yrs 11mths when he enlisted on the 30.5.1916.He was 5ft 7" weighed 109lb, he was employed as a fitters helper.His service number was 325955.In the remarks colum it says -Trans 2/8 th A&S, 13.7.17.His address was 23 William St Dumbarton. Id love to know what happened to him.Thanks |

Born Clifton, Galway, enlisted 22nd August 1914 at Dumbarton. He was discharged 14th Feb 1919 - Pulmonary TB, GSW thigh. Died 1st April 1922
at Dumbarton, so not a war death.
Should he be on memorial ? That was for those involved at the time to decide.

I see that " delboy " shows the newspaper reports of the Dumbarton war memorial unveiling on 1 October 1922 .
Would have thought that any of the casualties of war who died before the unveiling would have been included in the WW1 lists prior to this unveiling date in October

My goodness,thankyou so much.I find it really intresting he was not war dead,so to speak.I wonder who made that decision and why? I have taken my info from the tired n tattered old muster roll book at Dumbarton library and for Martin it says 5.10.14,I though this was his enlistment date?
Iam also having trouble matching up 3 other names to the memorial could you help again? Iam a volunteer at Dumbarton Library and I want to help them get as much info as they can on each of the men on the memorial stone.It will help when the school kids start their ww1 projects next year.The physical details I have from the muster roll I belive bring these fellas to life and will hopefully give future genarations a real feel for them.
The men I would like to know more about are Alex Peters Alex lived at 4 High Street Dumbarton,he was 24yrs and4 mths,he was 5ft 5 3/4", Alex service number was 2399.I have an enlistment date of 30.9.14.
Next is Sgt A.H McAllister,he was 22ys,he lived at Woodyard House Dumbarton (fancy lovely house in Dumbarton built for William Denny).He was 6ft 1 3/4 " so a big tall man for his time,it states intrestingly FIT FOR FOREIGN SERVICE- NO (then a red capital T beside it),In the remarks coloum it says promoted to Sgt.Service no 2942
Lastly Thomas Evans.Thomas was 17yrs ,height 5ft 3",he lived at 183 High Street Dumbarton.The enlistment date I have for him is 5.10.14 but this might be wrong.
I am loving this work,really makes my heart sing though it can be very sad at times too and some tears have been known.I have a folder full of live names.I want folks in the future to really get to know them and if anyone in future years does a search on their relative I want the folder they are give to give them answers and joy.Thanks again Anne |

He was discharged to the Reserve from the Argylls.

By " war dead " I mean commemorated officially as war dead by The Commonwealth War Graves Commission and with a war grave. Had he died before 31st August 1921 he would have qualified. Remember the war ended two year earlier in 1919.
I would imagine if the Dumbarton memorial had been erected sooner his name would have been absent today. As I wrote earlier - | Quote: | Should he be on memorial ? That was for those involved at the time to decide.

Alex Peters
Alex Peters attested into the Territorial Force for four years Home Service at Dumbarton on 30th September 1914 and later volunteed for " Overseas Service ". He embarked at Folkstone 3rd August 1916 and landed at Boulogne, France next day
He was posted to the 10th Battalion A & SH on 18th October 1916.
Posted " missing in the field " 9th April 1917, later reported KIA on that date. Burial reported 3rd May 1917
His parents were David and Jane Peters at 4 High St., Dumbarton. He was a single man, had a half brother and three half sisters.
McAllister
1260 Pte. Andrew Hutton McAllister, age 17 years 10 months, b Dumbarton, Apprentice boatbuilder with R McAllister & Son, Woodyard House, Dumbarton attested into the Territorial Force ( 4 years Home Service) on 23rd Feb 1910 at Dumbarton. He was embodied at the outbreak of war on 5th August 1914, later A/Sgt 2942 in the 9th A & S.H. 9th Nov 1914 to 24th March 1916. when he was medically discharged as " physically unfit " for further service due to VDH. This was pre-existing condition originating from 1911 and not caused or aggraved by ordinary military service.
This man only served at Home, lattery on the Forth Defences. There is no sign of his death in Scotland
This is another example where it is debatable whether he should be on the memorial. It seems they included any, and all, who ever served and later died to 1922.

That looks like it could be him, no service files though. This man was formerly 2874. SNWM is obviously wrong as the number 325570 did not exist before 1917

You would need to subcribe to Ancestry, Find my Past, etc to see records of which, thanks to the Luftwaffe in 1940, around only 30% survive today. Explains why I found nothing on Evens.
There is, as ever, a hefty cost involved.

| My local library in Wigtown allows free access to Ancestry. I think my daughter's local one in Keyworth, Notts, also offers free access so it may be worth checking out at your local library. |

The Long Long Trail is worth checking out http://www.1914-1918.net/ and apart from those Jim mentioned, Great War Forum http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/ and posting queries here of course. You can also gain quite a bit of info by cross checking between different war memorials if you are lucky, for example one of 'my' local men is listed on the local Post Office memorial so we know he worked for them, also another memorial shows that a man was a member of the local carpet bowls club so check for all memorials where he might be listed.

On the War Memorial he is Thomas J Evans and on scotlandspeople a Thomas James EVANS was born in 1897 in Dumbarton.
I am I right that CWGC has 1918? Whilst SDGW & SNWM have 1915?
The service numbers would make sense in he died in 1918

I'm not sure about this but if he is listed on the Tyne Cot Memorial doesn't that mean he died after August 1917?
