James Dickson – age 19 – Gunner (192833) 32nd Reserve Battery, Royal Field Artillery.
David had been a shepherd at Glendinning, Westerkirk, Dumfriesshire. He died of endocarditis in the Military Hospital in Maryhill Barracks, Glasgow.
(Source: Westerkirk Parish Roll of Honour and GRoS – Death Register)
Born 1897 in Teviothead, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Williamina (Oliver) Dickson and of James Dickson of Winningtonrig, Stobs, Cavers, near Hawick, Roxburghshire.
Died on Service on 18 March 1917 and buried in Teviothead New Parish Churchyard.
Also named on the Cavers and Kirkton Roll of Honour in Cavers Parish Church and on the Westerkirk Parish War Memorial and Roll of Honour (but with incorrect date of 18/3/1918).

2nd LT. WALTER BARRIE, BERRYFELL.
Walter Barrie – age 37 – Second Lieutenant, 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers attached to the 6th Battalion, Border Regiment.
Walter was a farmer when he joined the Lothians and Border Horse Yeomanry at the outbreak of war. He landed as Sergeant (725) with his squadron in France in September 1915. He was selected for officer training and was commissioned in the KOSB in November 1916 but was attached to the 6th Border Regiment in France.
Born 1880 at Hartsgarth, Newcastleton, Roxburghshire. Son of the late John Barrie of South Berryfell, Hawick (died 1907) and of Margaret (Lillico) Barrie of Stobs Cottage, Hawick. Grandson of the late John Barrie of Hartsgarth, Liddesdale.
Killed in Action on 7 June 1917 and buried in Irish House Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Liddesdale War Memorial in Newcastleton.


PTE. JAMES BURNETT, BARNES.
James Burnett – age 24 – Private (5340) 9th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
James was employed on the North British Railway when he was one of the first from the Slitrig Water area to enlist in 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 and was wounded during the battle of Loos in September 1915 but was able to return to his battalion in France, only to be killed near Loos in the following year.
Born 1891 in Kirkton, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Euphemia (McLean) Burnett (died 1896) and of John Burnett of Barnes, Stobs. Step-son of Lizzie or Elizabeth (Davidson) Burnett of 10 Union Street, Hawick who married John in 1898 in Kirkton. John died in 1917.
Missing in Action on 20 June 1916 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.


PTE. ANDREW CURRIE, GREENBRAEHEADS.
Andrew Currie – age 24 – Private (183565) 31st Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Andrew was farming when he enlisted at Calgary, Alberta in November 1915. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in May 1916 and joined his battalion in France in August but he was wounded and treated at the 3rd General Hospital in Boulogne before being evacuated to hospital in Chichester in December 1916. He returned to France in May 1917 and rejoined his battalion.
Born 1893 in Kirkton. Son of George and Mary (Scott) Currie of Greenbraehead, Hawick.
Missing in Action on 6 November 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

PTE. HENRY ELLIOT, FLEX.
Henry Elliot – age 36 – Private (29367) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Henry was the farm steward at Flex when he enlisted in the 2/4th KOSB in November 1914. He was posted to the 2nd KOSB in France in 1916 but transferred to the 7th/8th Battalion.
Born 1881 in Oxnam, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Robert Elliot (died 1917) and of Annie (Jardine) Elliott of Bedrule, Roxburghshire. Husband of Catherine Wright (Paxton) Elliott of Acre Cottage, West End, Earlston and of Scraesburgh, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire who he married in 1910 in St. Boswells, Roxburghshire.
Died of Wounds on 27 February 1917 and buried in Habarcq Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Also named on the Earlston Parish War Memorial in Berwickshire.


2nd LT. WALTER HADDON, COLISLINN.
Walter Haddon – age 27 – Second Lieutenant, 7th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Walter was educated at Warriston School in Moffat, at Edinburgh Academy and attended Edinburgh University. He a member of the Territorial 9th Royal Scots for three years from 1909 and re-enlisted in August 1914. He was commissioned in the KOSB in November 1914 and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but was wounded during the battle of Loos and died in the Quality Street Casualty Clearing Station. Walter was buried at Fosse No.7 de Bethune but his burial place was lost.
Born 1887 in Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Walter Haddon of Firth, Hawick (died 1907) and Caroline Johnson (Ross) Haddon of Colislinn. Hawick.
Died of Wounds on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Hawick Roll of Honour, on the St. John's Church memorial in Hawick and on the Edinburgh Academy memorial.

LT. A. R. MACFARLANE-GRIEVE, PENCHRISE PEEL.
Alwyn Ronald Macfarlane-Grieve – age 28 – Lieutenant, 1/8th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Alwyn was educated at Perse School, Cambridge where he was school captain and a sergeant in the Officer Training Corps, and at Keble College Oxford where he again was a sergeant in the OTC. He graduated in 1911 and then studied and lectured at Rennes University. He was working near Cambridge in 1914 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and posted back to Perse School OTC to instruct new officers in November 1914. He obtained a commission in the A&SH in June 1916 and joined his battalion in France in November but he was killed four months later near Arras.
Born 1888 in Kensington, London. Son of William Alexander Macfarlane-Grieve of Edenhall and Penchrise, Roxburghshire and of Impington Park, Cambridgeshire (died April 1917), and of Florence Emily (Fuller) Macfarlane-Grieve of Toft Manor, Cambridge.
Killed in Action on 17 March 1917 and buried in Highland Cemetery, Roclincourt, France.
Also named on the Histon and Impington Parishes War Memorial in Cambridgeshire, on the Perse School memorial and on the Keble College memorial and Roll of Honour.


PTE. THOMAS R. OLIVER, WINNINGTONRIG.
Thomas Richardson Oliver – age 19 – Private (12171) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
Thomas joined his battalion in France June 1915.
Born 1895 in Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of William Douglas Oliver of Brougham Place, Hawick and of Jane (Richardson) Oliver of Winningtonrig, Stobs.
Missing in Action on 5 October 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Lilliesleaf War Memorial and on the Hawick Roll of Honour.


PTE. THOMAS REDPATH, NEWMILL.
Thomas Redpath – age 31 – Private (8321) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1901 Thomas, aged 15, was living with his brother William and was a butcher's message boy in Hawick. He joined the army in 1908 and landed with the 2nd KOSB at Le Havre on 15 August 1914. He was invalided home after the retreat from Mons but rejoined the battalion in November 1914. He was wounded in April 1915 and after he recovered he was posted to the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli. He then served in Egypt before the battalion moved to France in March 1916.
Born 1886 in Hawick, Roxburghshire as Thomas Kyle Telfer Redpath.
Son of Robert and Janet (Telfer) Redpath of 18 Allars Crescent, Hawick. Husband of Annie (Byers or Douglas) Redpath of Newmill-on-Slitrig and of 8 Kirkstile, Hawick who he married in 1908 in Hawick.
Missing in Action on 16 August 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Hawick Roll of Honour.

PTE. JAMES W. TELFER, EARLSIDE.
James William Telfer – age 22 – Private (7359) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James enlisted in November 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1893 in Hownam, Roxburghshire. Son of Gilbert and Jane (Burns) Telfer of Earlside and of 15 High Street, Hawick.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


PTE. ROBERT WRIGHT, FLEETY.
Robert Wright – age 20 – Private (S/18072) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Robert was a farm servant and was living at Langburnshiels, Hawick when he enlisted in May 1915. He was posted to the 2nd Battalion in France in July and transferred to the 1st Camerons in October 1915.
Born 1897 in Hawick, Roxburghshire as Robert Archibald Wright. Son of John and Jessie (Bathgate) Wright of Backdamgate, Hawick, of Langburnshiels and of Flatty (sic) Cottage, Stobs, and of Brock Houses, Fountainhall, Stow, Midlothian.
Killed in Action on 13 January 1916 and buried in Dud Corner Cemetery, Loos, France.


PTE. DAVID WYLIE, FLEX.
David Wylie – age 19 – Lance Corporal (240863) 1/6th (Perthshire) Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
David was employed with James Elliot at Flex Farm when he enlisted. He was posted to the 4th/5th Black Watch in France but was transferred to the 1/6th Battalion.
Born 1898 in Hawick, Roxburghshire as David Murray Wylie. Son of Francis and Agnes (Murray) Wylie of 17 Trinity Street, Hawick.
Missing in Action on 20 July 1918 and named on the Soissons Memorial, France.
