A question for the bankers here on the forum:
What is the source of info that the RBS have used for this webpage?
http://heritagearchives.rbs.com/wiki/Hawick
The part that interests me is;
"The outbreak of war in 1914 brought a falling off in trade and, more seriously, the loss of skilled staff to the armed services. Four men left Hawick branch to serve in the forces during the First World War. Barely a generation later, another four men served in the Second World War. " _________________

It will be records within their archives.
I know that in my banks archives they have a file for the British Linen Bank which lists all the men of an age suitable for enlistment in their employ. It lists if they had already enlisted under the Derby scheme, or if they had been rejected as unsuitable.
There were also lists of the branches, and the reasons they gave for not sending men to fight. One branch listed that they couldn't employ women as there was no capacity to install toilet facilities for women staff!
I'm not sure, but I think most banks had to keep detailed records of who had left their employ to enlist.
The file I'm referring to had lists for most banks based in Scotland - next time I visit I'll take a look at what they have for Hawick.
I've also got a list of the men for the British Linen Bank branch in Hawick who were on active service - the list is dated 1st August 1918. PM me your email address and I'll send that list of Hawick men to you. |
