I am sure you have come across the pronunciation, but if anyone is asking for directions to this place, it is pronounced "kergunyon"!!!!

John McKnight Martin, born 1919 at Colvend. Son of Robert and Elizabeth Martin.

The first of the Horsa gliders carrying the 7th Battalion, KOSB landed at Arnhem on the first day of the battle, Sunday 17 September 1944, to secure the Ginkel Heath position for the 4th Parachute Brigade. On the 25th the battalion were defending the perimeter near Oosterbeek Hoog Railway Station and that night were withdrawn to cross back over the Rhine. (pegasusarchive.org)

George Carnochan, Private (693234) 43rd Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regiment) Age 31.
Born 1888 at Gateside, New Abbey, Dumfriesshire. Son of George and Mary Jane (McKay) Carnochan. Enlisted November 1916 at Winnipeg, Manitoba. Killed in action 1 October 1918, buried in Ramillies British Cemetery, France and also remembered on the Morton Parish War Memorial in Thornhill.
At enlistment George gave his DoB as 5/8/1887 at Thornhill.
In 1891 age 2 he was at 32 New St. Thornhill with "Place of Birth" as Gateside.
In 1901 age 12 he was at Kirgunzeon with his uncle and aunt, William and Elizabeth Pagan, "born" Thornhill.

Davis Muirhead Carter, Gunner (223763) "B" Battery, 83rd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Age 30.
Born 1886 at Colvend, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Thomas and Jeannie (Muirhead) Carter of Bargrug Farm, Kirkgunzeon and Craignair St. Dalbeattie. Enlisted May 1916 in Army Veterinary Corps, transferred to RFA. Killed at Ypres. Missing in Action 1 October 1917, remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium and on Kirkgunzeon Parish Church Roll of Honour.

Killed near Arras. Missing in action 12 April 1918, remembered on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium, and on the Kirkgunzeon Parish Church Roll of Honour.

Born 1895 at Kirkgunzeon. Son of John and Elizabeth (Collins) Patonof Barclosh Farm, Dalbeattie. Employed by a firm of Dalbeattie Solictors before moving to the Rural Workers Society in Edinburgh. Enlisted February 1915.Wounded at Loos. Missing in action 1 July 1916, remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France and on Dalbeattie War Memorial.

Walter Lorraine Roan, Private (116304) 7th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (British Columbia Regiment) Age 27.
Born 1889 at Craigley, Urr, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Walter Lorraine Roan and Euphemia (Irving) Roan of Gateside Farm, Kirkgunzeon. Enlisted March 1915 in the Canadian Mounted Rifles at Vancouver BC. stating tha he was born 9/10/1891 at Kirkgunzeon. Killed in action 8 April 1917, buried in Arras Road Cemetery, Roclincourt, France and remembered on the Kirkgunzeon Parish Church Roll of Honour.
Until the Armistice this cemetery only contained the graves of 71 officers and men of the 7th CIB (BC Regiment) who fell in April, May and June 1917.

James Thomson, Private (28694) 16th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regiment) also called the Canadian Scottish. Age 31.
Born 1884 at ? Son of William and Mary Thomson of Beeswing, Dumfriesshire. The Stewartry RoH states born and educated in the Stewartry (Kirkcudbrightshire) Formerly a Piper with the 72nd Regiment, Seaforth Highlanders of Canada. Enlisted August 1914 in 10th CI and again (see note below) in September 1915 at Valcartier, Quebec. Died of wounds 23 April 1915, buried in Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery, Belgium and also remembered on the New Abbey War Memorial.

From Wikipedia: In 1909 members of Vancouver's Scottish community sought to raise a highland regiment. On 24 November 1910 authorisation was received from the Militia Department for the formation of a new regiment in Vancouver bearing the number 72 and wearing the same uniform and tartan as the Seaforth Highlanders. On 4 August 1914 Lt.Col. Edwards-Leckie, commanding officer, offered the regiment for overseas service. His request was denied and instead the regiment provided 25 officers and 514 men for the 16th Battalion, CEF.

Born 1892 at Kirkgunzeon. Son of Thomas and Janet (McMinn) Watson of Ivy Cottage, Kirkgunzeon. Enlisted August 1914 and served in German East Africa. Died 20 September 1916 of malaria at Handeni, East Africa, buried in Dar Es Salaam War Cemetery, Tanzania.
