I am sure you have come across the pronunciation, but if anyone is asking for directions to this place, it is pronounced "kergunyon"!!!!

John McKnight Martin, born 1919 at Colvend. Son of Robert and Elizabeth Martin.

The first of the Horsa gliders carrying the 7th Battalion, KOSB landed at Arnhem on the first day of the battle, Sunday 17 September 1944, to secure the Ginkel Heath position for the 4th Parachute Brigade. On the 25th the battalion were defending the perimeter near Oosterbeek Hoog Railway Station and that night were withdrawn to cross back over the Rhine. (pegasusarchive.org)

George Carnochan, Private (693234) 43rd Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regiment) Age 31.
Born 1888 at Gateside, New Abbey, Dumfriesshire. Son of George and Mary Jane (McKay) Carnochan. Enlisted November 1916 at Winnipeg, Manitoba. Killed in action 1 October 1918, buried in Ramillies British Cemetery, France and also remembered on the Morton Parish War Memorial in Thornhill.
At enlistment George gave his DoB as 5/8/1887 at Thornhill.
In 1891 age 2 he was at 32 New St. Thornhill with "Place of Birth" as Gateside.
In 1901 age 12 he was at Kirgunzeon with his uncle and aunt, William and Elizabeth Pagan, "born" Thornhill.


PTE. D. M. CARTER, RFA
Davis Muirhead Carter, Gunner (223763) "B" Battery, 83rd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Age 30.
Born 1886 at Colvend, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Thomas and Jeannie (Muirhead) Carter of Bargrug Farm, Kirkgunzeon and Craignair St. Dalbeattie. Enlisted May 1916 in Army Veterinary Corps, transferred to RFA. Killed at Ypres. Missing in Action 1 October 1917, remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium and on Kirkgunzeon Parish Church Roll of Honour.

L/CPL. J.A.CURRIE, KOSB
John Alexander Currie, Lance Corporal (240727) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 23.

Born 1890 at Ruthwell, Dumfriesshire and brought up in Bent Cottage, Kirkgunzeon. Son of John and Sarah Davitt. A teacher at St. Mary's Academy, Glasgow he enlisted as a Private in August 1916. Killed near Arras. Missing in action 12 April 1918, remembered on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium, and on the Kirkgunzeon Parish Church Roll of Honour.

L/CPL. R. GILCHRIST, BLK W-TCH
Robert McKillop Gilchrist, Lance Corporal (S/40327) 1st Battalion, Black Watch. Formerly (1028) Scottish Horse Yeomanry. Age 21.
Born 1896 at Mersehead Cottage, Kirkbean, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Hugh and Annie (McKillop) Gilchrist of Byrecroft, Kirkgunzeon.
Missing in action 18 April 1918, remembered on the Loos Memorial, France and on the Kirkgunzeon Parish Church Roll of Honour.

PTE. J. P. HAMILTON, RFA
James Paterson Hamilton, Gunner (221376) "A" Battery, 18th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Age 31.
Born 1888 at Kirkgunzeon. Son of John and Agnes (Paterson) Hamilton of Drumwhinnie Farm and of Beeswing. Missing in action 3 October 1918, remembered on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France.

Born 1885 at Kirkpatrick, Glasgow. Son of James and Jane Houston of Kirkhouse, Kirkgunzeon. Missing in action 28 March 1918, remembered on the Arras Memorial, France.

PTE. J. HUNTER, CAMERONS
James Hunter, Private (16062) 6th Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. Age 21.
Born 1896 at Greenhead, Caerlaverock, Dumfriesshire. Son of William Hunter and of Mary Ann (Gilbertson) Hunter of Woodbine House, Spycraig Rd. Dalbeattie and of Tarkirra Cottage and Mossbank, Kirkgunzeon. Died of wounds 4 April 1918, buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France and remembered on the Kirkgunzeon Parish Church Roll of Honour.
Also listed on the Bankend War Memorial (near Caerlaverock)

PTE. J. J. IRVING, CANADNS.
James Johnstone Irving, Private (693076) 43rd Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regiment) Age 32.
Born 1884 at Kirkgunzeon. Son of Henrietta Wright; husband of Dorothy Daisy Irving - both of Cumrue, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire. Enlisted July 1916 at Winnipeg, Manitoba, resident in Fort William, Ontario. Killed in action 6 March 1918, buied in Thelus Military Cemetery, France.

Born 1875 at Kirkgunzeon. Son of Robert Milligan of Dunlop, Ayrshire. Killed in action 24 August 1916, buried in Blighty Valley Cemetery, Authuile Wood, Somme, France.

PTE. J. MILLIGAN, SEAFORTHS
James Milligan, Private (S/6444) 7th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. Age 24.
Born 1892 at Kirkcudbright. Son of James and Catherine (Watson) Milligan of Beeswing. Enlisted November 1914. Wounded at Loos in September 1915 - in the same action his brother Robert was killed.
Missing in action 12 October 1917, remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

John Paton, Lance Corporal (20658) 16th Battalion (2nd Edinburgh) Royal Scots. Age 21.
Born 1895 at Kirkgunzeon. Son of John and Elizabeth (Collins) Patonof Barclosh Farm, Dalbeattie. Employed by a firm of Dalbeattie Solictors before moving to the Rural Workers Society in Edinburgh. Enlisted February 1915.Wounded at Loos. Missing in action 1 July 1916, remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France and on Dalbeattie War Memorial.

PTE. W. L. ROAN, CMR
Walter Lorraine Roan, Private (116304) 7th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (British Columbia Regiment) Age 27.
Born 1889 at Craigley, Urr, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Walter Lorraine Roan and Euphemia (Irving) Roan of Gateside Farm, Kirkgunzeon. Enlisted March 1915 in the Canadian Mounted Rifles at Vancouver BC. stating tha he was born 9/10/1891 at Kirkgunzeon. Killed in action 8 April 1917, buried in Arras Road Cemetery, Roclincourt, France and remembered on the Kirkgunzeon Parish Church Roll of Honour.
Until the Armistice this cemetery only contained the graves of 71 officers and men of the 7th CIB (BC Regiment) who fell in April, May and June 1917.

PIPER J. THOMSON, CANADNS.
James Thomson, Private (28694) 16th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regiment) also called the Canadian Scottish. Age 31.
Born 1884 at ? Son of William and Mary Thomson of Beeswing, Dumfriesshire. The Stewartry RoH states born and educated in the Stewartry (Kirkcudbrightshire) Formerly a Piper with the 72nd Regiment, Seaforth Highlanders of Canada. Enlisted August 1914 in 10th CI and again (see note below) in September 1915 at Valcartier, Quebec. Died of wounds 23 April 1915, buried in Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery, Belgium and also remembered on the New Abbey War Memorial.

From Wikipedia: In 1909 members of Vancouver's Scottish community sought to raise a highland regiment. On 24 November 1910 authorisation was received from the Militia Department for the formation of a new regiment in Vancouver bearing the number 72 and wearing the same uniform and tartan as the Seaforth Highlanders. On 4 August 1914 Lt.Col. Edwards-Leckie, commanding officer, offered the regiment for overseas service. His request was denied and instead the regiment provided 25 officers and 514 men for the 16th Battalion, CEF.

PTE. J. WATSON, ASC
James Watson, Private (M2/117443) 622nd Motor Transport Company, Army Service Corps. Age 24.
Born 1892 at Kirkgunzeon. Son of Thomas and Janet (McMinn) Watson of Ivy Cottage, Kirkgunzeon. Enlisted August 1914 and served in German East Africa. Died 20 September 1916 of malaria at Handeni, East Africa, buried in Dar Es Salaam War Cemetery, Tanzania.
