The memorial is said to be the largest battalion memorial on the old western front.

Unveiled by the Duke of Argyll is all O know. Originally without trees and bushes around it.

The 8th Argyll’s Memorial at Beaumont Hamel

With me in the Picture to give an idea of size

I found it difficult to find the Memorial as Newfoundland Park dominates the surrounding area where the Newfoundlanders were slaughtered on the first day of the Battle of the Somme 1st July 1916. It is located between Auchonvillers and Beaumont Hamel on the D163.

It is signposted 'Monument Ecossaise'.

The 8th Argyll’s attacked as part of the 51st Highland Division on 13th November 1916. The site of the Memorial is only yards from where their Battalion HQ was on that day.

The position is close to the Sunken Road and the signal for the attack was the 2nd blowing of the Hawthorn Crater.

After purchasing the ground at a nominal price the Memorial was unveiled by the Duke of Argyll on Sunday 4th March 1923. It stands 27 foot high and the funds for it were raised by ‘the ladies of Argyll.’

The original TF Bn would have been Argyllshire men as it was known as 8th Argyllshire Bn Princess Louise’s Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Through all the War Memorials in Argyll you will see the sacrifice of this relatively small population.

There is a very famous Pipe tune composed by a piper in the Bn. The Taking of Beaumont Hamil. Still played in the highest competitions it was composed by Great Uncle of mine, (Later) Pipe Major John McLellan DCM. His poetry is also linked to the Memorial at Buzancy, France. He also composed a pipe tune of that name.

Tachum,
Do you have the Buzancy info? PM me for a copy of the 1918 postcard with the Buzancy poem McLellan wrote.
