when in Edinburgh recently, I noticed a new bronze plaque, about A5 in size or a little smaller, on the gate pillar of a cemetery reading (from memory) just "Commonwealth War Graves". Having not seen one before, it caught my eye.

My local War Memorials Officer has just told me that CWGC plan, in the coming weeks and months, to put similar plaques at the entrance to all cemteries and graveyards which contain any War Graves.

I cannot find anything on the internet and my usual contacts haven't heard either. Anyone heard about this project?

As these are just signs, and the graves they refer to will hopefully already be recorded on the War Graves Project, I don't think these need to be recorded on here.

Paul, Ken & David and other colleagues :

I attended a WFA meeting at the Tayside Branch in Dundee during October this year when the CWGC -Scotland , Iain Anderson gave a talk on the Commission and he said that where there is a Commission grave in any cemetery or graveyard or burial ground on the mainland or isles (even no longer habited islands too ) they would be erecting Commision signs to highlight that there are war graves in that cemetery etc . He said that many people in Scotland and Uk think that war graves are located in war zones overseas and the Commission want to show the public that there are many many war graves in Scotland . He quoted to us how many there were in Scotland

Some locations have already got these signs he said

best wishes

The signs are not unlike those seen overseas indicating Commonwealth War Graves locations and is part of work being carried out in the lead up to events marking 2014-2018

This is the latest version, which differs slighty from those in Edinburgh. I understand that there around 1,300 seperate sites in Scotland where there are war graves with the majority of those in Dundee put in place last week.
