François Thurot (1727 – 28 February 1760) was a French privateer, merchant naval captain and smuggler who terrorised British shipping in the early part of the Seven Years' War.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fran%C3%A7ois_Thurot#February_1760.2C_the_last_battle
for a full history.
He was killed in action against the Royal Navy off the Isle of Man and his body was found on the shore near the village of Monreith in Mocrum Parish, Wigtownshire. He was interred in what is now the old Kirkmaiden Churchyard. (The present day Kirkmaiden Parish is on the opposite side of Luce Bay)

The plaque was placed here by the Swedish branch of the Order of Coldin.

He was buried at the expense of the local lord, Sir William Maxwell, who also served as chief mourner.

The entrance to the Maxwell family mausoleum.
