I have started to research Charles Willox Gnr 135460 238th Royal Garrison Artillery born Peterhead Died Home Son of James Willox, Lower Grange, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire. Also James Simpson Willox, Fish Curer, 2 Greenhill, Peterhead. 1901 Census: Charlie. Mother Jane Willox: 2 Gladstone Rd; Peterhead. B 1896. Occ Market Gardener. Paperwork says he was twice gassed. Deceased on letter dated 1st June 1920. I looked on Ancestry to see his paperwork. This date is well within the CWGC last date of death used in WWI.

There is a death registered for a Charles Willox of the appropriate age in 1920 at St. Nicholas, Aberdeen City - in hospital rather than at home?

Derek has kindly sent me a copy of it but right now I'm unsure of the cause of death. So unsure if it would help his case.
I've emailed him asking to put it on here.

Stricture of esophagus Lobar Pneumonia (right) 4 days.
I know he was gassed twice so would his death have been brought on by that. Would it be a cause that he might be given a CWGC grave?

Anne

There is no prospect for this man as a war death / CWGC commemoration since there is no direct link between his death and his service.

The principal cause of his death is more likely linked to the digestive rather than respitory system.

There seems to be some doubt in the surviving records as to whether he was gassed. Although the Pensions Ministry mention gassing, his unit and casualty details show no record of it.
The only time he is shown in hospital is in Nov 1918 due to what looks like GSW, R Buttock, slight.
He was demobilised ( transferred to the Reserve ) in January 1919.

I'm still wondering about the medical report on his death certificate and why he might be considered for a CWGC grave as his death was due to his condition.

Anne

Not sure what you mean by " the medical report on his death certificate ".

The DC details given are the Cause of Death ( Stricture of esophagus Lobar Pneumonia (right) 4 days. ) and have no direct link to his service or service record.
If you have further official info, can you forward it to me.

The cause of death has to have a proven link to his service. Both conditions could have begun in the year or so since he was demobbed, the latter cause is of four days duration.

Would being gassed twice not effect his health and partly be a contributory factor?

No, there were many who were badly gassed and lived to old age. Some had chest complaints for the rest of their life, but it was not the cause of their death.

As advised earlier, the issue here is proof , rather than making assumptions. There has to be an official record(s) linking his cause of death to his military service which would be acceptable to MOD / CWGC.
There is none.

Had the DC stated his cause of death was " due to gas poisoning two years ago ", or the like, and his record recorded him being gassed and treated for it, that would be different.
Willox was not medically discharged, but demobilised in the usual way in 1919 without reference to illness. As already pointed out, there is debate as to whether he was gassed.
