FARRIES GORDON PTE. A&SH.

Gordon Farries – age 27 – Private (S/11973) 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
In 1911 Gordon was living at Feltham, Middlesex and was employed as a nurseryman at Veitch's Nursery. He moved to Kew Gardens in 1913 and was a sub-foreman when he enlisted in 1915.
Born 1891 in Dumfries. Son of Thomas Charlton Farries and his second wife Liticia Jane (Johnstone or Grierson) Farries of 2 Gordon Street, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 20 April 1918 and buried in Feuchy Chapel British Cemetery, Wancourt, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial, together with his brother Thomas Charlton Farries.



FISHER JOHN PTE. CAMERONS.

John Morrin Fisher – age 29 – Private (2218 & 200398) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
After some 9 years in London, working in the Civil Service, John enlisted in September 1914.
He went to France with the 1/4th Battalion in February 1915 and served at Neuve Chapelle, Festubert, Loos and Ypres.
Born 1887 at Kirksyke, Hoddom, Dumfriesshire – as John Morrin. Son of Robert and Jane (Morrin) Fisher of The Masonic Arms, Crossmichael.
Husband of Edith Valentine (Davis) Fisher of Park Villa, Cheam, Surrey who he married in 1909 at Fulham, London.
Died of Wounds on 14 April 1917 and buried in Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial, and, together with his brother James Fisher, on the Crossmichael Parish War Memorial, Kirkcudbrightshire.



FULTON ADAM PTE. CAMERONS.

Adam Fulton – age 21 – Private (S/14190) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Adam was working on his father's farm when he enlisted in October 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915.
Born 1894 in Tinwald, Dumfriesshire. Son of Archibald and Maggie Fulton of Tinwald House.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Tinwald Parish War Memorial in Amisfield Village.

GALLOWAY JACK CPL. AUST.

John Galloway – age 34 – Private (2029) 40th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
John was educated at Dumfries Academy before moving to Robert Gordon's College in Aberdeen. He studied Arts and Science at Aberdeen University 1904-06, became a journalist and for a short time he was on the staff of the “Aberdeen Free Press” before he went to London. Later he emigrated to Tasmania, where, with his brother Alexander, he became a successful fruit farmer. The brothers enlisted in May 1916 at Clairmont, Tasmania and sailed from Melbourne in September, landing at Plymouth in December. John had been ill on the voyage and was admitted to Parkhouse Camp Hospital, Andover (on Salisbury Plain) where he died of Mumps and Cardiac arrest.
Born 11/11/1881 in Kirriemuir, Forfarshire. The birth was also registered in Dumfries where his parents were domiciled at that time and where his father was H.M. Inspector of Schools.
Son of John and Mary Edward (Barrie) Galloway of 23 Crawford Road, Aberdeen and of Bidd, Port William, Wigtownshire.
(Jack was a nephew of J.M. Barrie)
Died on Service on 17 January 1917 and buried in Aberdeen (Springbank) Cemetery.
Also named on the City of Aberdeen Roll of Honour.



GIBSON ROBT. PTE. CAMERONS.

Robert Gibson – age 25 – Private (S/16478) “A” Company, 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Robert was a son of William Gibson of Gibson and Dunn of Cadogan Street in Glasgow and the grandson of Robert Gibson of Little Cocklick in Urr Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire. He had been a pupil of Dumfries Academy. He enlisted in December 1914 and went to France in August 1915. He was twice severely wounded; in November 1915 and in October 1916. He returned to France for the final time in February 1918.
Born 1892 at (Barony) Blackfriars, Glasgow. Son of the late Christina Margaret Gibson and of William Gibson of Woodlands Road and of Mansionhouse Road, Newlands, Glasgow. Grandson of Robert Gibson of Little Cocklick, Urr.
Missing in Action on 28 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial, on the Urr Parish War Memorial and on the Glasgow Roll of Honour.

GLOVER A. M. T. LT KOSB (RAF).

Alexander Milligan Thomson Glover - age 23 - Lieutenant: 70th Squadron Kings Own Scottish Borderers attached to the Royal Flying Corps.
Alexander was educated at Laurieknowe School, Maxwelltown, and at Dumfries Academy.
He was working for the Remington Typewriter Company and was a member of the Lanarkshire Imperial Yeomanry. At the outbreak of war he was mobilised and transferred to the KOSB, serving in the ranks until commissioned in October 1915. He joined his battalion in Egypt and applied to join the RFC. He was trained in Cairo and Alexandria before returning to the UK and went to France as a pilot in June 1917.
Born 1894 at Maxwellton, Troqueer. Son of the late Joseph Johnston Glover, former Provost of Dumfries and of Agnes (Jardine) Glover of Hazelwood Place, Laurieknowe, Maxwelltown. Brother of Maud Glover of Kirkfield, Colvend, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Missing in Action on 17 August 1917 and named on the Arras Flying Services Memorial to the Missing, France.
Also named on the Maxwelltown/Troqueer War Memorial, on the Troqueer Parish Church Memorial and on the Colvend Parish War Memorial.


GOODFELLOW JAS. PTE. SR. {Possibly:

James Goodfellow – age 22 – Private (30335) 9th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
James was a Booking Clerk at Whithorn Railway Station when he enlisted in the Highland Light Infantry in December 1914. He was transferred to the Cameronians before going to France. He died of wounds sustained two days earlier.
Born 1895 in Whithorn. Son of Thomas and Jane (McKie) Goodfellow of 30 George Street, Whithorn.
Died of Wounds on 18 March 1917 and buried in Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Also named on the Whithorn War Memorial.


GRAHAM HUGH C. LT. MGC.

Hugh Christison Graham – age 23 – Lieutenant: 9th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers attached to 33rd Company, Machine Gun Corps.
After attending Dumfries Academy, Graham was an Arts student at Edinburgh University 1911-1915 and was awarded his M.A. He was a Cadet Sergeant in the OTC and was commissioned in the RSF in April 1915. Promoted to Lieutenant in April 1916, he was killed at Messines.
Born 1893 in Applegarth, Dumfriesshire. Son of John L. and Elspeth Graham of Millhousebridge, Applegarth, Lockerbie.
Killed in Action on 8 June 1917 and buried in La Laiterie Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Applegarth and Sibbaldbie Parish War Memorial in Applegarth Church, on the Lockerbie War Memorial, and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.

William Robert Grierson – age 40 – Private (41169) 9th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
William enlisted in June 1916. He was formerly a Sergeant in the Volunteer Training Corps.
Born 1877 at Gordon Street, Dumfries. Son of John and Agnes (McQueen) Grierson of Dumfries.
Husband of Maggie Isa Robson (Stewart) Grierson of Twynholm who he married in 1900 at Twynholm.
Died of Wounds on 26 April 1917 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Twynholm Parish War Memorial and on the memorial and roll of honour in Twynholm Parish Church.



HAINING WM. J. 2/LT. KOSB.

William John (Jack) Haining – age 22 – Second Lieutenant: 3rd Battalion attached to 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
“Jack” enlisted as a Private in September 1914. He was selected for Officer training and commissioned in October 1915.
Born 1894 in Dumfries. Son of the late George Haining and of Wilhelmina (Boyd) Haining of 3 Gordon Street, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 28 January 1917 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial, on the Greyfriars Church memorial and on the St Mary's Church memorial, both in Dumfries.



HOUNAM SAM. W. 2/LT. BLACK WATCH. {Not listed by CWGC

Samuel Wolves Hounam – age 22 – Second Lieutenant: 11th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Samuel was born at Gilnockie Schoolhouse in Canonbie where his father was the teacher. He went on to Dumfries Academy and then to Edinburgh University as a student of the Arts 1914-1915. He was a member of the OTC and was commissioned in the Black Watch in April 1915. Samuel was discharged due to illness in November 1916 and awarded a Silver War Badge No.2530. Samuel died of a brain tumour at his mother's family home in Kildonnan, Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire. He was described as a medical student.
Born 1896 in Cannonbie Dumfriesshire. Son of John Hounam and of the late Marion (McGill) Hounam.
Died on 2 June 1918 and buried in Kirkmadrine cemetery, Stoneykirk.
Also named on the Canonbie and Stoneykirk War Memorials and on the memorial from the former Gilnockie School.

HUGGAN R. ELLIOT LT. HLI.

Robert Elliot Huggan – age 25 – Lieutenant: 9th (Glasgow Highlanders) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry attached to 3rd/1st King's African Rifles.
Formerly Private and Sergeant (3840) 9th HLI
Robert had been educated at St. Michael's School and Dumfries Academy before the family moved to Glasgow. He was a lithograph artist in Pollockshields when he tried to enlist as Private (1143) Elliot Huggan in the 1st Sportsman's Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers in November 1914 but he was considered not likely to be an efficient soldier and discharged. He did enlist with the 9th HLI and joined the battalion in France in August 1915. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in December 1916 and promoted to Lieutenant and seconded to the KAR in April 1917.
Born 1893 in Dumfries. Son of William and Margaret Huggan of Dumfries, and of 41 Tassie Street, Shawlands, Glasgow.
Died on Active Service on 29 May 1918 and buried in Mangochi Town Cemetery, Malawi.
Also named on the Glasgow Roll of Honour.



JOHNSTON A. Y. P. 2/LT. KOSB.

Andrew Yuill Pollock Johnston – age 21 – Second Lieutenant: 5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew was a medical student at Glasgow University when he was commissioned in the KOSB in August 1916. He went to France in September 1916.
Born 1895 in Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire. Son of Andrew Yuill Johnston and Mary Johnston of 7 High Street, Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 5 October 1917 and buried in Hooge Crater Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Lochmaben War Memorial, on the former Barras United Free Church memorial now in Lochmaben Parish Church and on the Glasgow University Roll of Honour.



KERR JAS. PTE. KOSB.

James Kerr – age 22 – Private (23834) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James worked on the farm with his father when he enlisted in June 1916. He joined the 1st KOSB in France in October 1916. He was gassed in November 1917 and evacuated to hospital in Ireland before returning to France in March 1918.
Born 1896 at Wychling, Kent. Son of Edward and Agnes (Maxwell) Kerr of Payden Street, Wychling, Kent, then of Burnside, Parkgate, Kirkmichael, Dumfriesshire and of Foreside, Lochanhead, Lochrutton, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Killed in Action on 3 June 1918 and buried in La Kreule Military Cemetery, Hazebrouk, France.
Also listed on the Kirkmahoe Parish War Memorial in Kirkton, Dumfriesshire.

LAKEMAN ARTHUR F. LT. BLACK WATCH.

Arthur Frederick Lakeman – age 31 – Second Lieutenant: 4th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) attached to 15th Battalion, Tank Corps.
Arthur was commissioned in the Black Watch in May 1917 and transferred to the Tank Corps in January 1918.
Born 1886 in Reading, Berkshire. Son of Frederick Sanders Lakeman and Amy Louisa Lakeman, of Elsternwick, Lenzie, Dumbartonshire.
Died on Active Service on 5 August 1918 and buried in St. Pierre Cemetery, Amiens, France.
Also named on the Kirkintilloch War Memorial, together with his brother Harold Leslie Lakeman.

Thomas Edwards Laurie – age 20 – Lance Corporal (6358 & 333088) 1/9th (Glasgow Highlanders) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Formerly Private (2538) Lanarkshire Yeomanry.
Thomas worked in his father's live-stock auctioneers business. He enlisted in the Lanarkshire Yeomanry in 1916 and was posted to the HLI in the November.
Born 1897 in Dumfries. (Indexed as Lawrie) Son of James and Robina Laurie of "Hollyhurst," Annan Road, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial, on an individual memorial in St. Mary's Church in Dumfries and on the church memorial.

William Laurie – age 27 – Corporal (405570) 38th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
William had been in Canada since 1912 and was working as a Commercial Traveller when he enlisted in April 1915 in Toronto, Ontario. He was a Sergeant/Instructor in England for 2 years before going to France in April 1918.
Born 1891 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of the late William Laurie and of Jessie Ann (Brown) Laurie of 2 Church Place, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 10 August 1918 and named on the Vimy Memorial, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial and on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.

LEE FRED. SGT. RE.

Frederick James Lee – age 21 – Lance Corporal (77220) 22nd Air Line Section, 2nd Indian Army Corps Signal Company, Royal Engineers.
Fred had served his apprentice ship as a motor mechanic at Penman's Queensberry Motor Works in Dumfries. He was working in Glasgow, and living at 44 Westend Park Street, when in March 1914, he enlisted in the Territorial Force as Sapper (9053) in the Scottish Airline Signalling Company, Royal Engineers. In April 1915 he re-enlisted in the Regular Army at Hitchen, Hertfordshire as Driver (77220) Royal Engineers and went out to Egypt in August 1915. In April 1916 he moved to Basra but contracted dysentery and died in the 41st Field Ambulance.
Born 1895 in Keir, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late Elizabeth (Cairns) Lee and of Alexander Lister Lee of Fair, Selkirk and of 121 Bruntsfield Place, Edinburgh.
Died on Active Service on 17 June 1916 and buried in Amara War Cemetery, Iraq.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial, on the Greyfriars Church memorial in Dumfries, and on the Glasgow Roll of Honour.



LITTLE DONALD D. LT. LANARK YEO.

Donald Alexander Duncan Little – age 29 – Second Lieutenant: Lanarkshire Yeomanry attached to 14th (Fife and Forfar Yeomanry) Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Formerly Private (21277) 11th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Donald's father was a superintendent in the Eastern Telegraph Company in the Middle East. Donald was educated at Dumfries Academy. He was working as a clerk when he enlisted at Valcartier Camp, Quebec in September 1914 and, with the 1st Canadian Division, sailed from Canada in the October. After further training in England the Division moved to France in February 1915. Donald was gassed and invalided back to England where he was posted to Officer Training. In November 1916 he was commissioned at a Second Lieutenant in the Lanarkshire Yeomanry and was posted to the 14th Black Watch in Palestine.
Born 1888 in Bombay, India. Son of Alexander Duncan Little and of Maud Amelia Brooks (Warner) Little of Telegraph House, Perim Island in the Red Sea. In 1901 Maud and the children, Margaret, Donald and David, were living in Caerlaverock, Dumfriesshire. The father was “abroad on Tel. Service”.
Husband of Sheila M. C. (Dillon) Little who he married in 1915 in Chelsea, London.
Died of Wounds on 22 August 1917 and buried in Port Said War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Nithsdale Amateur Rowing Club Roll of Honour in Dumfries.

James Little – age 33 – Private (30654) 11th Battalion, Royal Scots.
James was educated at Laurieknowe School, Maxwelltown and at Dumfries Academy. He had been employed by the Liverpool company, Miller Brothers, in West Africa for about 7 years when due to ill health he returned to the UK in 1915. After recuperating he enlisted in April 1916.
Born 1883 in Monreith Village, Glasserton, Wigtownshire – as James Milwain. Son of Helen Milwain and step-son of James Little of Lilylea Cottage, Maxwelltown. (The family grave in Troqueer Cemetery has James Milwain Little)
Missing in Action on 30 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Maxwelltown/Troqueer War Memorial and on the Laurieknowe Church Memorial now in Troqueer Parish Church.(as James M. Little)



LOVE THOS. L/CPL. KOSB.

Thomas Love – age 20 – Lance Corporal (12307) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas was working as a plumber in Sanquhar when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915.
Born 1895 in Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late Elizabeth Lees (Ferguson) Love and of James Love of 16, West Lochan, Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Sanquhar War Memorial.



LUSK CHAS. P. CAPT. CANADA.

Charles Peter Lusk – age 38 – Private (736510) 16th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Charles had been ranching in Canada for some years when he enlisted in February 1916 at Lethbridge, Alberta.
Born 1879 in Howell, Kirkcudbright. Son of the late Andrew Lusk of Lochvale, Dumfries and Craigton, Castle Douglas and of Martha (Paterson) Lusk, of 5 Cambridge Street, Edinburgh. Brother of Mathew Lusk of Airlieland, Castle Douglas.
Missing in Action on 8 November 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

Angus MacDonald – age 36 – Corporal (18209) 15th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Angus described himself as a fireman, living in Burton, Westmorland when he enlisted in January 1915. He had previously served for 5 years with the King' Own (Lancaster) Regiment and was promoted to Corporal in December 1915, just before he went to France in January 1916.
Born 1880 in Dumfries. Son of Janet (Fletcher) MacDonald of Castle Street, Dumfries, and the late Dr. Alexander Dall MacDonald. (M.D. Edinburgh)
Missing in Action on 1 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial and, with his brother, on a memorial plaque in St. John's Episcopal Church in Dumfries, and on the church memorial.

Colin MacDonald – age 32 – Captain: 1st Battalion attached to 2nd Battalion, 7th Gurkha Rifles.
Colin had been educated at Dumfries Academy, Edinburgh University and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst from where he was commissioned in August 1902 and joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in Calcutta in November. He transferred to the India Army in December 1903 and by August 1911 was a Captain with the Gurkhas. In August 1914 his battalion moved to Egypt and in March 1915 to the Persian Gulf. He was killed at the Battle of Ctesiphon near Baghdad.
Born 1883 in Dumfries. Son of Janet (Fletcher) MacDonald of Castle Street, Dumfries, and the late Dr. Alexander Dall MacDonald. (M.D. Edinburgh)
In 1911, as a Lieutenant in the Indian Army, he was visiting his mother at Burton Old Hall, Burton by Carnforth, Westmorland.
Missing in Action on 22 November 1915 and named on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.

MACDONALD DONALD CPO RND.

Donald MacDonald – age 29 – Petty Officer (Clyde Z/2016) Nelson Battalion, Royal Naval Division
After attending Dumfries Academy, Donald became a seaman and had gained his 2nd Mate Certificate in September 1906. He enlisted in November 1914 and was rated P.O. and then Chief Petty Officer by April 1915. In June 1916 he reverted to P.O. and joined the Nelson Battalion in France.
Born 1887 in Ruthwell, Dumfriesshire. Son of George (Station Master) and Sarah Macdonald of Moniaive Railway Station, Glencairn, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 13 November 1916 and buried in Cayeux Military Cemetery, Somme, France.
Also named on the Glencairn War Memorials.

Norman Somerled Macdonald – age 23 – Pioneer (209698) No. 1 Special Company, Royal Engineers.

Born 1895 in Ruthwell, Dumfriesshire. Son of George (Station Master) and Sarah Macdonald of Moniaive Railway Station, Glencairn, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 24 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, France.
Also named on the Glencairn War Memorials and on the Glasgow University Roll of Honour.

Note: The Army Registers of Soldiers effects indicates that he may have served as JOHN GORDON.



MATTHEWSON ALEX. J. L. CPL. RFA. {Not listed by CWGC

Alexander James Llewelyn Matthewson – age 22 – Gunner ( 224635 ) Royal Field Artillery.
Alexander was educated at the Dalbeattie Higher Grade Public School and at Dumfries Academy. He enlisted in 1917 but was discharged from the army on 30 December 1918 due to illness and he died of tuberculosis at Bermondsey Military Hospital, Ladywell, Lewisham, London.
Born 9 July 1897 at Rhayader, Radnorshire, Wales – when his father was Inspector of Works, Dam Construction, on the Elan Valley project for Birmingham Corporation Waterworks.
Son of James and his second wife Elizabeth Jane (McKie) Matthewson of Alpine Street, Dalbeattie.
Died on 11 October 1919.
Also named on the Dalbeattie War Memorial.

McGARVA HENRY PTE. KOSB.

Thomas Henry McGarva – age 17 – Private (235128) 10th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Formerly Private (2881) 5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
“Harry” of 26 Rae Street, Dumfries enlisted in the KOSB Reserve in January 1915. He was posted to the 10th Cameronians.
Born c.1900 in Las Palmas, Grand Canaria, Spain.
Son of Robert and Catherine Jose McGarva, of the British Consulate, Las Palmas, Grand Canary.
Missing in Action on 21 July 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.


McGEORGE CHAS. J. B. GNR. HAC.

Charles James Bertram McGeorge – age 19 – Private (10422) 2nd Battalion, Honourable Artillery Company.
Charles was a medical student at Edinburgh University when he enlisted in January 1916. He had been at the University and a member of the Officer Training Corps since 1915. He was placed in the Army Reserve and mobilised in February 1917, initially to the Cameron Highlanders before being posted to the HAC 2nd Infantry Battalion. He went to France in May 1917.
Born 1898 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of David and Mary McGeorge of Dock Park House and of Benridge. Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 7 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial, on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen, on an individual memorial in St. Michael's Church in Dumfries and on the church memorial.


McGOWAN NORRIS PTE. KOSB,

Norris McGowan – age 42 – Private (27821) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Formerly Private (3084) Fife and Forfar Yeomanry.
Norris had been educated at Dumfries Academy and at the Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh. He served his apprenticeship in law with his father, a solicitor in Dumfries. He went India for some time and then in 1905 became a fruit farmer near Auckland in New Zealand in partnership with his brother Anstruther. He returned in 1915 to enlist and, although over age (41), joined the F&F Yeomanry. He transferred to the 2nd KOSB in December 1916.
Born 1875 in Dumfries. Son of James Hairstens McGowan and of Annie Fuller (Marshall) McGowan of Ellengowan, Dumfries. Brother of Bertram McGowan of Dumfries. Missing in Action on 1 August 1917 and Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Dumfries War memorial and on the Merchiston Castle School memorial in Edinburgh.

McGOWAN ROWLAND L/CPL. KORL.

Rowland McGowan – age 24 – Lance Corporal (2038) 1/5th Battalion, King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment)
Rowland was educated at Glencaple Public school, Hutton Hall Academy, Dumfries Academy, and Edinburgh University (qualified L.D.S.) Employed as a dental surgeon, he assisted Mr J W Hall, Castle Hill, Lancaster for 18 months.
Born 1891 in Caerlaverock, Dumfriesshire. Son of John McGowan and of Grace Montgomery Hope (Pool) McGowan of Laurieston House, Auldgirth, Dumfriesshire. Brother of James McGowan 10 Woodland Gardens, Muswell Hill, London.
Died of Wounds on 27 May 1915 and buried in Bedford House Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Glencairn Parish War Memorials, on the Lancaster War Memorial and on the Trinity Presbyterian Church memorial in Lancaster.



McJANNET JOHN B. PTE. AUST.

John Blacklock McJannet – age 20 – Trooper (123) 10th Australian Light Horse.
John was educated at Durisdeer School and Dumfries Academy before the family left for Australia in about 1910. He enlisted in October 1914 at Guildford in Western Australia and was killed at Walker's Ridge, Gallipoli.
Born 1895 in Durisdeer, Dumfriesshire. Son of Francis James McJannet and Janet Bell McJannet, formerly of Gateslack Farm, Durisdeer and of Minniberri, Kununoppin, Western Australia.
Missing in Action on 7 August 1915 and named on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Durisdeer Village War Memorial together with his brother Francis Ronald Reid McJannet, Private (698) 11th Battalion, Australian Infantry, killed in action, 25 April 1915.
Another brother, Frederick William McJannet, Private (1992) also of the 11th Battalion returned to Australia from Gallipoli on 17 September 1915.

Oddly both John B McJannet and his brother F.R.R. McJannet (known as Ronald) are named on an "end of term" Academy Roll of Hour in July 1916 but only John is named on the memorial.



McKENZIE WM. PTE. A&SH.

William McKenzie – age 19 – Private (S/14888) 10th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
William had been educated at Dumfries Academy and was in his second year as an Arts student at Edinburgh University when he enlisted there in November 1915.
Born 1897 in Dumfries. Son of Euphemia McKenzie of Victoria Avenue, Maxwelltown and the late William McKenzie, of Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 12 October 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial, on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen and on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.

McKINNELL BRYDEN CAPT. L’POOL SCOT.

Bryden McKinnell, Military Cross – age 26 – Captain: 1/10th Battalion, The King's (Liverpool Regiment)
Bryden was born in Liverpool but as a child moved to Copenhagen where his father was in business. Later the family came to live in Maxwelltown where his grandfather. John Bryden, managed the Troqueer Mill, and Bryden was educated at Dumfries Academy. He became a Lieutenant in the 5th KOSB before he returned to Liverpool as a corn-broker. He was commissioned in the Liverpool Scottish and landed with his battalion at Le Havre in November 1914. He was promoted to Captain in January 1915 and was awarded the M.C. He was killed at Hooge, Belgium.
Born 1889 in Tranmere, Birkenhead, Cheshire. Son of William and Margaret McKinnell.
Missing in Action on 16 June 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Hoylake and West Kirby War Memorial.



McLELLAN JOSEPH PTE. CAMERONS.

Joseph McLellan – age 20 – Private (S/14269) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Joseph was an apprentice millwright in Dumfries when, as soon as he was 18, he enlisted in November 1914. He had attended Brownhall School, in Kingholm Quay, before winning a bursary to Dumfries Academy. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915.
Born 1896 in St. Michael's, Dumfries. Son of Joseph and Janet McLellan of Kingholm Quay, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the War Memorial in Kingholm Quay, on the Dumfries War Memorial and on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.

McNAE JOHN C. PTE. RSF.

John Charteris MacNae, Military Medal – age 37 – Private (40946) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
John was educated at the Glasgow Street School in Maxwelltown and at Dumfries Academy. He was a mining engineer and was living at 64 Buccleuch Street, Glasgow when he enlisted in January 1916 initially in the 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys) but he transferred to the RSF in France in December 1916 and while serving with them was awarded the Military Medal as 40946 Pte. J. C. MacNae, R.S. Fus.
Born 1880 in Maxwelltown, Troqueer. Son of Robert and Grace (Charteris) MacNae of Rosemount Cottage, Maxwelltown.
Missing in Action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Maxwelltown/Troqueer War Memorial and on the Troqueer Parish Church Memorial.

Robert MacNae, Military Cross – age 32 – Second Lieutenant: 1/10th (Scottish) Battalion, The King's (Liverpool Regiment) Formerly Private, Transvaal Scottish.
Robert was educated at the Glasgow Street School in Maxwelltown and at Dumfries Academy and became a chartered accountant in Johannesburg, South Africa. In 1914 he enlisted in the Union Defence Force, was posted to the 8th Infantry, Active Citizen Force (the Transvaal Scottish) and served in German South West Africa (Namibia).
At the end of that campaign he returned to the UK and in January 1916 he was commissioned in the 1/10th Liverpool Regiment. He was awarded the Military Cross for his actions on 9 August 1916 as 2nd Lt. Robert McNae, L'pool R. "For conspicuous gallantry in action. When all his senior officers had become casualties, he rallied his men and led them in two fresh attempts to capture the enemy's
trench. Finally, he carried his company serjeant-major, who was severely wounded, back to safety. He set a fine example throughout the day

Born 1884 in Maxwelltown, Troqueer. Son of Robert and Grace (Charteris) MacNae of Rosemount Cottage, Maxwelltown.
Killed in Action on 10 October 1916 and buried in Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium.

McWILLIAM JAS. L/CPL. HLI.

James McWilliam – age 25 – Corporal (6172 and 332903) 1/9th Battalion (Glasgow Highlanders) Highland Light Infantry. Formerly Private (1405) Lanarkshire Yeomanry.
James was working on his father's farm when he enlisted in March 1916 in the Lanarkshire Yeomanry. He was posted to the HLI in France and was wounded at Arras. He was killed by a sniper near Bailleul.
Born 1892 in Terregles, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Thomas and Isabella (Kennedy) McWilliam of Kirkland, Terregles.
Missing in Action on 16 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Terregles Parish War Memorial.

Robert Kennedy McWilliam – age 24 – Private (235091) 1st Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Robert enlisted in the Lanarkshire Yeomanry in August 1916. He was posted to the 9th and then the 1st Cameronians. He was wounded at St. Julien and then, on 25 October 1918, at Le Cateau. He died of his wounds in the 1st Australian General Hospital, Rouen.
Born 1894 in Terregles, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Thomas and Isabella (Kennedy) McWilliam of Kirkland, Terregles.
Died of Wounds on 9 November 1918 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.
Also named on the Terregles Parish War Memorial.



MILLAR WM. LT. TANK CORPS.

William Millar – age 25 – Second Lieutenant: 6th Battalion, Tank Corps.
Formerly Private (104461) Machine Gun Corps.
William was educated at Dumfries Academy and worked in his father's coach building business. He enlisted as a Private in the 1/9th Battalion, Royal Scots in January 1916, served in the MGC and then was commissioned in the Tank Corps in July 1917. He was posted to France in the following December.
Born 1892 in Dumfries. Son of Andrew Millar of Alexandria Villa, Rotchell Park, Maxwelltown, and of his first wife Elizabeth (Crichton) Millar.
Killed in Action on 23 August 1918 and buried in Douchy-Les-Ayette British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Maxwelltown/Troqueer War Memorial and on the St. Michael's Church Memorial in Dumfries.
