Three school pals who enlisted together in the Lanarkshire Yeomanry and who were posted together to the Glasgow Highlanders.

AUSTIN WM. A. PTE. CANADA.

William Andrew Austin – age 30 – Private (441372) 46th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
William had been an agricultural engineer in Canada for 10 years when he enlisted in June 1915 at Sewell Camp at Carberry in Manitoba. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in March 1916 and joined his battalion in France in June. He was wounded in November 1916 and evacuated to the 3rd Scottish General Hospital in Glasgow. When he recovered he became an Instructor to new troops in England until August 1918 when he rejoined his old battalion in France.
Born 1888 in Dunscore, Dumfriesshire. Son of William and Maggie Young Austin of Rae Street, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 1 November 1918 and buried in Aulnoy Communal Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial and on the Gasstown Church memorial now in St. Michael's Church.



BANNERMAN ERIC 2/LT. A&SH.

Eric Bannerman – age 20 – Second Lieutenant: 1/8th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Eric was educated at George Heriot's School in Edinburgh and at Dumfries Academy. He was a Law Apprentice with his father' s firm of Solicitors, Walker and Sharpe, in Maxwelltown when he enlisted for officer training at the Inns of Court Officer Training Corps in January 1916. Commissioned to the A&SH in February 1917.
Born 1897 in Edinburgh. Son of William and Jane or Jeanie Augusta (McKean) Bannerman of The Holm, Maxwelltown.
Killed in Action on 20 November 1917 and buried in Ribecourt Road Cemetery, Trescault, France.
Also named on the Maxwelltown/Toqueer War memorial and named with his brother, Robert, on a stained-glass window in Granton Baptist Church, Edinburgh, on the George Heriot's College memorial and on the Maxwelltown United Free Church Memorial now Maxwelltown West Church.



BARBOUR GAVIN L/CPL. ROYAL SCOTS.

Gavin Barbour – age 21 – Lance Corporal (38221) 8th Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Formerly L/Cpl. (3639) Royal Scots.
Gavin served his apprenticeship as a banker with the Bank of Scotland in Dumfries before becoming a Teller at the Strathaven Branch, Lanarkshire. He enlisted in January 1915 in the KOSB before transferring to Royal Scots and then to the KOYLI. The family grave inscription has him as “Royal Scots attached to 8th KOYLI”
Born 1896 at New Abbey, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Francis and Margaret (Graham) Barbour of West Park, Beeswing, Kirkcudbrightshire.
The family were resident at Tallowquhairn Farm, Kirkbean in 1901.
Died of Wounds on 21 September 1917 and buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Kirkbean Parish War Memorial.

BARBOUR H. D. 2/LT. RAF.

Hastings Duncan Barbour – age 18 – Lieutenant: 102nd Squadron, Royal Flying Corps.
Hastings was educated at Dumfries Academy and at Silcoats School, Wakefield, Yorkshire. He was employed at the Commercial Bank in Dumfries when he joined the RFC in April 1917. He was killed whilst flying as an observer in FE2b serial no. A5678 during a night bombing raid.
Born 1899 in Dumfries. Son of William and Annie Forbes (Duncan) Barbour of Castle Douglas Road, Maxwelltown.
Killed in Action on 21 October 1917 and buried in Roeselare Communal Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Maxwelltown/Troqueer war Memorial and on the Maxwelltown United Free Church Memorial now Maxwelltown West Church.



BARRIE CHARLES D. O. CPL. THE LONDON R.

Charles David Ogilvy Barrie – age 35 – Corporal (5067 & 511509) 1/14th Battalion, London Regiment (London Scottish)
Charles attended Edinburgh University from 1898 to 1903 when he graduated M.A. (Hons) He became a journalist.
Born 1881 in Dumfries. Son of the late Alexander Ogilvy Barrie, H.M.Inspector of Schools, and of Mary Cowan Barrie of "Strathview," Kirriemuir, Forfar. Husband of Mary Letitia ( Holmes) Barrie, of 87 Lonsdale Road, Barnes, London who he married in 1908 in Chorlton, Lancashire. Missing in Action on 1 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Kirriemuir War Memorial.

William Cowan Ogilvy Barrie – age 34 – Lieutenant: 1/5th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
William attended George Watson's College in Edinburgh in 1899 and then Edinburgh University from 1900 to 1904 when he graduated M.A. (Hons) He became a teacher and was commissioned in the Black Watch in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in November 1914. He was wounded twice. On the second occasion. in June 1915, he was evacuated back to the UK.
Born 1882 in Dumfries. Son of the late Alexander Ogilvy Barrie, H.M.Inspector of Schools, and of Mary Cowan Barrie of "Strathview," Kirriemuir, Forfar.
Missing in Action on 14 October 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Kirriemuir War Memorial.

William Lindsay Beattie – age 26 – Lieutenant: 1st Battalion, Border Regiment.
Formerly Lance Corporal (2604) 1/4th King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.
William "Billy" L. Beattie was a professional rugby league footballer, playing at club level for Wakefield Trinity. He enlisted in September 1914 and was commissioned in March 1915, went to Egypt in October 1915 and moved to France in March 1916.
Born 1889 in Maxwelltown, Troqueer, Kircudbrightshire. Son of the late William Beattie and of Margaret (Milroy) Beattie of 70 English Street and later of 8 Carnegie Street, Moffat Road, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 27 January 1917 and buried in Quarry Cemetery, Montauban, Somme, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial and on the former Laurieknowe Church memorial now in Troqueer Parish church.



BELL ARTHUR LT. BLACK WATCH.

Arthur McLean Bell – age 29 – Lieutenant: Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) attached to 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Late of Sumatra.
Born 1888 in Moniaive, Glencairn, Dumfriesshire. Son of John Proudfoot Bell and Mary Bell. (Source:CWGC) Husband of Martha (McKinney) Bell, of St. Vigeans, Leven, Fife who he married in 1915 in Dingwall, Ross and Cromarty.
Killed in Action on 20 May 1918 and buried in Sandpits British Cemetery, Fouquereuil, France.
Also named on the Glencairn Parish War Memorial in Moniaive and on the Glencairn Churches memorials.

BIGGAR WM. P. 2/LT. W. YORKS.

William Francis Wilson Biggar – age 26 – Second Lieutenant: 10th Battalion, The West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own).
Formerly Corporal (16536) The Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment)
William was educated at Dumfries Academy and was employed by the Royal Insurance Company in Dumfries. He was at the Head Office in Edinburgh when he enlisted in September 1914 as a Private in the 10th Hussars. He transferred to 2nd Dragoons then to the infantry in the West Riding Regiment. He was commissioned in May 1917 into 10th WYR. Severely wounded near Arras in October 1917 he was evacuated to the UK. He had recovered from his wounds but contracted influenza and died from pneumonia in the Military Hospital in Edinburgh Castle.
Born 1893 in Chorlton, Manchester. Son of William Wilson Biggar and Frances Biggar of Victoria Road, Maxwelltown.
Died on Service on 20 October 1918 and buried in Troqueer Cemetery.
Also listed on the Maxwelltown/Troqueer War Memorial and on the Troqueer Parish Church Memorial.



BLACK ADAM PTE. KOSB.

Adam Black – age 23 – Private (2724 & 240881) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Adam was a law apprentice with the Town Clerks of Dumfries when he enlisted in 1914. He went out to Egypt in mid 1916. His father was the Company Sergeant Major of the Dumfries Volunteers.
Born 1895 in Dumfries. Son of Adam and Isabella (Nicholson) Black of 2 Greystone Bank, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 24 November 1917 and buried in Jerusalem War Cemetery, Israel.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial, on the Nithsdale Amateur Rowing Club Roll of Honour and on the Townhead Church memorial, now in St. Michael's Church in Dumfries.

Missing in Action on 24 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial on the Townhead Church memorial now in St. Michael's Church in Dumfries.

BLACKLOCK WM. 2/LT. BLACK WATCH.

William Blacklock – age 38 – Second Lieutenant: 11th (Reserve) Battalion, The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
William was educated at Laurieknowe School, Maxwelltown and at Dumfries Academy.
He was apprenticed in the stationery business before emigrating to South Africa. Returning to Scotland in 1910 he opened a bookselling and stationery business in Dumfries. He enlisted as a Private in September 1914 in the Royal Scots and was commissioned in May 1915 to the Black Watch. He served in Egypt and in Salonica where he contracted dysentery. William died in hospital Malta while being invalided home.
Born 1877 in Troqueer. Son of James and Mary Elizabeth (Wannop) Blacklock of Dumfries. Brother of Miss Blacklock of The Cottage, Maxwelltown.
Died on Active Service on 12 September 1916 and buried in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.
Also listed on the Maxwelltown/Troqueer War Memorial and on the St. George's Church Memorial in Dumfries.


BOWRON KEITH S. CAPT. LOND. SCOT.

Keith Stuart Bowron, Distinguished Conduct Medal – age 28 – Captain: 1/14th Battalion, London Regiment (London Scottish) attached to 2/10th Battalion, London Regiment.
Keith landed with the 1/14th battalion at Le Havre in September 1914. He was commissioned in the battalion in August 1916.
Awarded the DCM as 1516 Sergeant K. S. Bowron, l/14th (County of London) Battalion, The London Regiment (London Scottish), T.F.
“For conspicuous gallantry on the 25th September, 1915, near Hulluch. After leading his platoon with great skill and daring to a point near the Lone Tree he crawled forward alone to reconnoitre. While doing so he was wounded, but nevertheless he completed his reconnaissance and returned to his platoon with valuable information
Born 1890 in Hampstead, London. Son of William and Janet Douglas Bowron of London.
Killed in Action on 8 August 1918 and buried in Querrieu British Cemetery, Somme, France.


BRUNTON ALEX. PTE. HLI.

Alexander Brunton – age 35 – Private (30122) 18th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Alexander had served his apprenticeship in Dumfries and was a chemist in Musselburgh and a Member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society when he enlisted in June 1916. He joined his battalion in France in January 1917 but was fatally wounded in mid-July and died in the 5th Casualty Clearing Station in Tincourt.
Born 1882 in Dumfries. Son of Thomas and Jane Brunton of Corberry Terrace, Maxwelltown. Husband of Harriet Phillips (Donaldson) Brunton of 126A, High Street, Musselburgh, Midlothian who he married in 1913 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Died of Wounds on 19 July 1917 and buried in Tincourt New British Cemetery, France.

BRYSON ALEX. 2/LT. KOSB.

Alexander Bryson – age 29 – Second Lieutenant: 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Formerly Lance Corporal (420373) 16th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Alexander was a Chartered Accountant when he enlisted in January 1915 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He served with the CEF in France until July 1916 when he was nominated for a commission and sent for officer training at Gailes in Ayrshire. In March 1917 he was commissioned in the KOSB.
Born 1887 at the Angel Hotel in Gatehouse-of-Fleet, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Son of Alexander and Georgina (Armstrong) Bryson of Castramont, Rotchell Park, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 25 June 1917 and buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


CAMERON ARCH. B. 2/LT. BORD. R.

Archibald Borland Cameron, Military Medal – age 24 – Second Lieutenant: 8th Battalion, Border Regiment. Formerly Private and Corporal (16964) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Archie was employed by Mr. Wylie of the Corn Exchange, Dumfries when he enlisted in December 1914 in 6th KOSB and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915. He was wounded in February 1916 and again in July when he had just been appointed Temp. Company Quartermaster Sergeant. He was commissioned in August 1917 in the Border Regiment.
He had been awarded Military Medal as 16964 Cpl. (Actg. Sjt.) A. Cameron, K. O. Sco. Bord.
Born 1896 in Ochiltree, Ayrshire. Son of James and Annie (Jack) Cameron of Lincluden Mains Farm, Terregles.
Missing in Action on 9 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Terregles War Memorial.


CROMBIE STEUART P. LT. KOSB.

Stewart Phyn Crombie – age 23 – Lieutenant: 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Stewart, his father, Alan Burgess Crombie and his brothers, Wilfrid Fitzalan Crombie and Alan Crombie, were all architects. He was articled to Sir John James Burnet in Glasgow. He enlisted in August 1914, was commissioned from the Glasgow University Officer Training Corps in November 1914 and joined the battalion in Gallipoli in August 1915.
Born 1893 in Dumfries. Son of Alan Burgess Crombie and of Elizabeth Jane (McIlraith) Crombie of Dumfries.
Killed in action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial, the Glasgow University Roll of Honour and, together with his brothers, on the Glasgow School of Art Roll of Honour.

CURRIE JOSEPH C. ENGR. RN.

Joseph Crichton Currie – age 27 – Third Engineer: S.S. "Clan Alpine" (Glasgow) Mercantile Marine.
Joseph was drowned when his ship was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U60 off Shetland while en route to Russia.
Born 1890 in Dumfries. Son of Jane Currie of 74 Copland Road, Ibrox, Glasgow, and the late William Currie of 80 Brooms Road, Dumfries.
Killed by Enemy Action/Lost at Sea on 9 June 1917 and named on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial, on the Glasgow Roll of Honour and on the Govan Old Parish Church memorial.


DALGLEISH ALEX. PTE. RASC. {Note: this man's name was DALGLISH

Alexander Dalglish – age 25 – Private (M2/130788) 17th Motor Ambulance Convoy, Army Service Corps.
Alexander was educated at Dumfries Academy before he became a farmer at Glenwhargen, Penpont, Dumfriesshire. He also managed his father's large sheep farm at Glenhurich in Argyllshire. Alexander described himself as a motor driver when he enlisted in the 595th Motor Ambulance Convoy Company in October 1915 and went with them to Salonika, landing there at the end of November. He died in the New Zealand Stationary Hospital as the result of a compound fracture of his right leg after an explosion from a bomb dropped by an enemy aircraft.
Born 1890 in Ulzieside, Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire. Son of Robert and Grace (Williamson) Dalglish, of Ulzieside, Sanquhar, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 8 January 1916 and buried in Salonika (Lembet Road) Military Cemetery, Greece.
Also named on the Sanquhar War Memorial as PTE. ALEX. DALGLISH RASC (MT)


DALZIEL ROBT. J. CPL. MGC.

Robert Jackson Dalziel – age 19 – Corporal (62719) 120th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
Formerly Private (25477) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Although intending to be a doctor, Robert enlisted in the KOSB in July 1916 and for four months instructed in musketry before he joined the MGC in France in March 1917.
Born 1898 in Dumfries. Son of Robert and Jane (Jackson) Dalziel of Bertram House, Milldamhead, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 6 May 1917 and buried in Fins New British Cemetery, Sorel-le-Grand, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial and on the St Mary's Church memorial in Dumfries.

DAVIDSON WM. CPL. LOND. SCOT. {Thought to be:

William Davidson – age 28 – Lance Corporal (2899) 1/14th Battalion, London Regiment (London Scottish)
In 1901 William, aged 14, and his brother, John Wallace Ord Davidson, aged 12, both born in China, were boarding at Christ's Hospital School in Newgate Street, London. William's name is on an “end of year” Dumfries Academy Roll of Honour in July 1916.
William joined his battalion in France in November 1914.
Born c.1887 in Shanghai, China. (Source:CWGC and 1901 census)
Son of George Greenshields Davidson (a marine engineer, born 1854 in Kirkinner) and of Jane Egan (Ord) Davidson (born 1863 in Tynemouth) who had married in 1886 in Shanghai.
Killed in Action on 15 June 1915 and buried in Cambrin Churchyard Extension, France.

John Wallace Ord Davidson was a Captain in the Chinese Labour Corps and served in France from June 1917. After the war he became H.M. Consul General in China.



DEMPSTER DAVID B. CAPT. KOSB.

David Burns Dempster, Military Cross – age 22 – Captain: 3rd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers attached to 2nd Battalion, Border Regiment.
David was an engineering student at Glasgow University and a member of the Officer Training Corps when he was granted a commission in April 1915. He served with 1st KOSB at Gallipoli and at the Somme and was wounded at Beaumont-Hamel. Later he was attached to the Border Regiment in Flanders and in one of the engagements there was awarded the M.C.
The family had lived in Dumfries for 10 years.
He was awarded the M.C. as 2nd/Lt. David Burns Dempster, K.O.S.B., Special Reserve. “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in reorganising his own company and the company on his right when all the officers were out of action

DICKIE WM. 2/LT. KOSB.

William Dickie – age 24 – Second Lieutenant: Border Regiment attached to 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was transferred to the Border Regiment but had yet to make the move when he was killed.
He attended Edinburgh University 1910-13 where he was awarded his M.A. (Hons. Classics) He was then a Scholar of Oriel College, Oxford until 1914. A member of the Officer Training Corps, he was commissioned in October 1914. William served at Gallipoli from August 1915 and in France where he was killed at Beaumont-sur-Ancre.
Born 1892 at Laurieknowe, Maxwelltown, Troqueer. Son of William Dickie (Editor of the Dumfries and Galloway Standard) and of Jane (Paterson) Dickie of “Mirtlewood” Albert Road, Maxwelltown.
Killed in Action on 1 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Maxwelltown/Troqueer War Memorial and on the St. George's Church Memorial in Dumfries.



DINWIDDIE FRED. PTE. ROYAL SCOTS.

Frederick Dinwiddie – age 35 – Private (27296) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
Frederick had served his apprenticeship with a tweed manufacturer in Dumfries and became a traveller for the company. He settled in the drapery trade in Chester in about 1906 and in 1911 was living at 75 Hoole Road, Chester. He gave up his business in September 1915, enlisted in the Royal Scots in Edinburgh and was posted to the 2nd Battalion on 7 June 1916. He was wounded on 17 July at Longueval and evacuated but died in the 1st Canadian General Hospital a week later.
Born 1881 in Kirkmahoe, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late James and Christina (Smith) Dinwiddie, of Newmains Farm, Kirkmahoe and of Marchfield Farm, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 24 July 1916 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Kirkmahoe Parish War Memorial in Kirkton and on the Hoole and Newton War Memorial in Chester.

DONALDSON ROBT. K. PTE. AUST.

Robert Coventry Donaldson – age 32 – Private (1661) 11th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
Robert left Dalton at the age of 16 and spent 3 years with an accountancy firm in Edinburgh before moving to London. He then worked in farming in South Africa, in India and in America before settling in Western Australia. He was very keen at football and a very good horseman. Robert enlisted at Perth in January 1915, sailed for Gallipoli from Freemantle in February and was posted to his battalion in May. He was evacuated to hospital at Lemnos in June and returned to his battalion on 8 July but a month later he was killed.
Born 1882 in Dalton, Dumfriesshire. Son of the Rev. Robert Donaldson and of Rosa Emma Donaldson of the Manse., Dalton.
Killed in Action on 1 August 1915 and buried in Shell Green Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.

James Alfred Jasper Douglas – age 25 – Private (17067) 15th Battalion (1st Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
Born 1892 in Edinburgh.
Son of Christina Douglas.
Missing in Action on 26 August 1917 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.



DOUGLAS WM. C. 2/LT. KOSB.

William Campbell Douglas – age 21 - 2nd Lieutenant: 3rd Battalion attached to 1st King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was educated at Kirkbean Public School and at Dumfries Academy before he began a mercantile career in London. He enlisted in November 1914 as a Lance Corporal in the 1/14th London Regiment (the London Scottish) In January 1916 he was commissioned in the KOSB and was posted to the 1st KOSB in France in August 1916.
Born 1896 at Kirkbean, KIrkcudbrightshire. Son of William and Annie (Campbell) Douglas of the Schoolhouse, Kirkbean.
Died of Wounds on 17 August 1917 and buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Kirkbean Parish War Memorial and on a family memorial inside Kirkbean Parish Church.

DUNKELD ROBT. SPR. RE.

Robert Dunkeld – age 26 – Sapper (T/3786 & 496816) 477th Field Company, Royal Engineers.
Robert was living in the village of Ewyas Harold in Herefordshire when he enlisted in the 2/1st South Midlands Company of the Royal Engineers. This Territorial Army Unit was later re-numbered as the 477th Field Company. He died of his wounds in the 45th Casualty Clearing Station at Dernancourt. Born 1890 in Cummertrees, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late James and Mary Dunkeld, of Cummertrees, Dumfriesshire. Brother of Miss M. H. Dunkeld of Ruthwell Post Office.
Died of Wounds on 26 January 1917 and buried in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Also named on the Ruthwell Parish War Memorial and on the Ewyas Harold Memorial Plaque.



DUNN THOS. CAPT. KOSB.

Thomas Dunn – age 24 – Captain: “B” Company, 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas attended Castle Douglas school and Dumfries Academy and was a Student of Arts and Law at Edinburgh University where he was awarded his M.A. in 1912. He was a Cadet in the University O.T.C. 1911-1913. Thomas was employed, whilst a law student, by W&J Burness WS of Edinburgh and enlisted as a Private in 1/4th Battalion, Royal Scots. He was commissioned in November 1914 as a Lieutenant in KOSB and was promoted to Captain in February 1916. He served at Gallipoli, in Egypt and Palestine. Killed at Gaza.
Born 1892 at Castle Douglas in Kelton parish, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of John and Jane (Rain) Dunn of St. Andrew Street, Castle Douglas.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also named on the Castle Douglas War Memorial and on the St. Andrew's Church memorial, now in the Castle Douglas Parish Church.

DUNN WM. J. 2/LT. KOSB.

William John Dunn – age 20 - 2nd Lieutenant: 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was educated at Laurieknowe School, Maxwelltown, Dumfries Academy and Edinburgh University where he was a student of Medicine 1913 - 1915. A Cadet Sergeant in the OTC January 1914 to March 1915 he was commissioned March 1915 in the 9th (Reserve) Battalion, KOSB and posted to the 6th KOSB in March 1916.
Born 1895 at Dumfries. Son of Captain Peter and Isabella Brydone (Ormiston) Dunn of Schoolhouse, New Abbey and of Ulster Place, Dumfries. At the time of his son's death Captain Peter Dunn was serving with the
1st Garrison Battalion, Royal Scots in Cyprus.
Killed in Action on 17 July 1916 and buried in the A.I.F. Burial Ground, Flers, France.
Also named on the Maxwelltown/Troqueer War Memorial, on the Troqueer Parish Church Memorial, on an individual plaque in the church and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.



DYKES JAS. J. CAPT. KOSB.

James Johnstone Dykes – age 29 – Captain: 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was qualified doctor and dentist and had studied medicine at Edinburgh University and at the Edinburgh Dental hospital. L.D.S., R.C.S. in 1907. L.R.C.P.&S. (Edinburgh) L.R.F.P.S. (Glasgow) – both in 1911. He worked with his father in the family dental practice in Dumfries and as a dental surgeon in the Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary. A long-standing member of the 5th KOSB, he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915.
Born 1886 in Dumfries. Son of Thomas and Mary S. Dykes, of Dumfries. Husband of Elizabeth Haining (Robison) Dykes, of Westfield, Maxwelltown, Dumfries who he married in 1912 in Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 12 July 1915 and buried in Redoubt Cemetery, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial, on the Greyfriars Church Memorial in Dumfries and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.

John Bell Edgar – age 21 – Private (3175) 1/13th Kensington Battalion, London Regiment.
After attending Dumfries Academy John had become a civil servant in London. He was living in Kensington when he enlisted in September 1914 and he joined his battalion in France in February 1915.
Born 1894 in Hutton, Dumfriesshire. Son of James Bell Edgar (Schoolmaster) and Barbara Bell Edgar of Boreland Schoolhouse, Hutton, of Dryfe View, Lockerbie and of 19 Bellevue Crescent, Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 9 May 1915 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Hutton and Corrie Parish War Memorial in Boreland village and on the Lockerbie War Memorial



EDGAR JOHN L/CPL. HLI.

John Edgar – age 22 – Corporal (6296 & 333026) 1/9th (Glasgow Highlanders) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. Formerly Private (1819) Lanarkshire Yeomanry.
John worked with his father on their farm at Eastpark, Caerlaverock. He enlisted in the Lanarkshire Yeomanry in March 1916 with his school friends Thomas Laurie of Dumfries and James McWilliam of Terregles (see below). At the end of the year they were posted to the 9th HLI in France.
Born 1895 in Caerlaverock, Dumfriesshire. Son of David and Hannah Edgar, of Newfield, Caerlaverock, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 17 March 1918 and buried in Potijze Chβteau Grounds Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Caerlaverock Parish War Memorial.



EDGAR ROBT. S. GNR. RGA.

Robert Symington Edgar – age 28 – Gunner (106210) 200th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
Robert served his apprenticeship in a drapers in Church Crescent, Dumfries before setting up in business as a Scotch Draper in Crewe, Cheshire. He was an expert motor-cyclist and enlisted in July 1916 as a despatch rider. He went to France in November 1916.
Born 1890 in Glencairn, Dumfriesshire. Son of Samuel and Margaret (Symington) Edgar, of Glencairn, Dumfriesshire. Husband of Jessie (Froggatt) Edgar of 9 Hungerford Avenue, Crewe who he married in 1914 in Crewe, Nantwich, Cheshire.
Killed in Action on 3 October 1918 and buried in Cerisy-Gailly Military Cemetery, France. Robert was buried in St. Helene British Cemetery, Pontruet, but was re-interred after the war.
Also named on the Glencairn Parish War memorials and on the Crewe and Nantwich War Memorial
