Western Front Association : Bulletin March 2012 : has a write up by the South of Scotland Branch WFA Chairman John Cameron and on page 33 of the Branch reports he has :
The Marble COWCADDENS CHURCH WAR MEMORIAL (glasgow ) was in the church when the church spire collapsed during repair work , crashing through the roof and down into the church . The memorial was so badly damaged , being reduced to small fragments , that it was impossible to save it . Unfortunately , at the time , no one had thought to PHOTOGRAPH it or record the names and other details . Stewart Kerrigan has tried to find out about this memorial without success.
ANYONE who knows anything about the COWCADDENS CHURCH WAR MEMORIAL or knows of any photographs /records of names on the MEMORIAL should get in touch .
Several other war memorials were slightly damaged but being metal can still be read so that those commemorated can be researched ..
( Note this is part of the WFA Bulletin for March 2012 reporting the branches South Scotland branch and report by John Cameron )

I thought I hadn't heard of this happening recently. WFA facts aren't quite right.
Stewart Kerrigan provided the following information which is on this page of the forum:
http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/warmemscot-ftopic3064.html
COWCADDENS CHURCH
The War Memorial from Cowcaddens Church was made of carved marble and removed when the building was closed for congregational use in 1977. The Memorial was placed in storage in the crypt of Renfield – St. Stephen’s Parish Church, along with other Memorials, as there was insufficient space to display all the War Memorials in the church that were in the possession of the united congregation.
Some of the Memorials in storage were damaged on 26th December, 1998 when the church steeple collapsed during a hurricane storm. The crypt was very badly damaged. The Memorials made of metal, although scratched, were eventually recovered from the rubble. Unfortunately, because the Memorial from Cowcaddens Church was made of marble it was shattered and destroyed and never recovered. As far as can be established, no record exists of the Names on this Memorial, who are now known only to God.
And not only Cowcaddens
BUCCLEUCH PARISH CHURCH
Buccleuch Parish Church was created from a union of Garnethill Parish Church and Port Dundas Parish Church (which had been destroyed by fire in 1914) in 1916. The congregation united with St. Stephen’s Parish Church in 1946, after which the former Buccleuch parish Church was used as halls by the united congregation. Buccleuch Halls were demolished in 1968 and the War Memorial which was in the premises has since been lost. As far as can be established, no record exists of the Names on this Memorial, who are known only to God. |

As the person who supplied the information to both the WFA and the Project there has unfortunately been some unintended confusion. Cowcaddens Church is now part of Renfield St Stephen's Church along with several other former city congregations that existed at the time of the First World War. The history of the current congregation and the number of its predeccessors is complicated and potentially confusing.
As far as I am aware the former Cowcaddens memorial being made of marable was destroyed when the spire of Renfield St Stephen's collapsed during a storm in 1998. The error in the article appears to have crept in during editing or printing.
The article is correct, in that as far as is known there is no photographic record or list of those who were named on the memorial. It is now 30 years since the building ceased to be used for church purposes. If anybody out there knows of any photograph of the war memorial or any of those who were named please contact me. Thanks |

Thanks for the update. Has anyone tried looking in the local papers around the time the memorials were unveiled in the post-war period? There may not be a photograph but there may be a list of names
Kind regards

A good idea that. All the church memorials in my area had a description and listing of all names upon them in the local newspaper when unveiled.

I would agree that the local papers are likely to have covered both unveilings as our local papers seem to have recorded even the smallest.
Another avenue might be the Church records which are perhaps with Register House(or whoeer they are now!).
Good luck
