I like the theory of the names being in the order the deaths were notified to the village. Checking the local newspaper to see when the notifications of death were published is probably the way to check if that is the case.

Yep, that's a good point.

I'm currently working my way across the civic memorials in Berwickshire - parish by parish. First, I put their names and any additional info (which of course vary from memorial to memorial!) into my database. I then add in information from other memorials in the parish eg. Roll of Honour, church plaque, etc. This gives me the maximum raw data to try to identify them.

So trying to identify 'hidden patterns' in some memorials can be useful.

I then try to find each man in CWCC + SNWM or if appropriate in Canada Virtual Memorial or the Australian Service Records. If there's reference to a location in that parish, or any adjacent one, I take that as definetely the man - ditto if the name is unusual and only one man comes back. I've got a copy of "Soldiers Died" for KOSB which can also help for many men.

My plan is to then triangulate this with the Coldstream History Society list, and the NA's Medal Index database, to mop-up the rest... CHS have done roughly the same exercise as myself just for outdoor civic memorials, but (inevitably) there are a few errors, and I hope that by combining this with my research I can plug some of these gaps and identify other men. Some never made it onto the civic memorial but are mentioned on others.

I'll then try the full "Soldiers Died" if any are still outstanding.

In the future I then hope to work through the local paper, chronologically.
(Local council is digitising this but it's not available yet).

Unfortunately only Earlston (as far as I know!) has a published list of men.

Kenny
